First I am assuming that this is not your furniture. What do you have for furniture? Do you have rug(s)? Are you buying all new or adding to what you already have? Are the doors that open to the garden sliders? First I would not hang drapery up at the ceiling, that just accentuates the height and takes away the coziness. What is on the wall behind the brown sofa? What color are the walls? Are you wanting to paint them? A guide would be to start with rugs, then choose furniture & window treatments then wall color.

Thanks! jck910 none of that furniture is mine as it is a rented property. We will pretty much be starting new as our furniture is from an apartment and very tiny....Yes the door are sliders....

Well then you have lots of options. If you are going to do the planning & buying on your own you need to post a floor plan here with measurements & windows & doors. If you can it would probably be a good idea to hire a designer to help with layout ideas.

I would definitely abandon one set of doors to the patio -- you only need one set (probably at the right) for access, so just treat the other as a window and let furniture be in front of it, etc. That should make it easy to arrange furniture down at that end and leave a walkway to the first set of doors and to the dining room.
