Need help with the fireplace area

The home is designed with 10 foot ceilings, crown molding and plantation shutters Part of our dilemma is deciding which design style to go to. We lean towards eclectic with contemporary and rustic. The house is somewhat more traditional than we would like.

Currently the fireplace looks like a small dark hole, an afterthought. The TV was designed with a large, deep recess and cubby holes for components. The fireplace is gas burning and can be converted to wood burning. We are wanting to raise the fireplace if possible and give it more presence. We want to get rid of the stacked stone, but keep the crown molding.

We have explored the idea of putting the tv over the fireplace or to the side, but we don't know what to do with the recessed right side of the fireplace.

The stacked stone is perfect for a more rustic feel - if that is what you really want. I would keep the fireplace where it is, but put a rustic large beam of a mantel over the fireplace. that will break up the massive wall of stone. Above it, I would place a gorgeous piece of art to attract the eye to that side of the wall.

Put the TV in the area designed for the TV - it is at a good height for viewing. AS the cubbies for components, use them for components or books, or decoration areas. I would paint the cubbies lighter and the walls behind the cubbies really dark as to make them disappear and show of your décor pieces.

What a beautiful space there is a lot of opportunity in the room to create your own style. The fireplace doesnt need much work I agree with adding a beam and I would also add rustic accents on the shelves such as pieces with bold textures. The light fixture is another piece that can be rustic and contemporary as well, you may want to reconsider having a fan if you have a/c and replace with a nice chandelier.
