Kitchen layout help needed

We have an akwardly shaped space. This drawing is the proposed layout with the dishwasher to the left of the sink and double ovens to the left of the dishwasher. The refrigerator is far right of the sink. The sink wall and the wall on the right of the drawing are windows.

The island does not give us enough prep/sitting/cooking space so we would like to follow the angled lines of the kitchen and have a sort of L-shaped island starting with the existing placement and continue around to in front of the refrigerator. The part that juts out at the top right of the drawing is HVAC that we are not planning to move. We would like to put a pantry cabinet to the right of the HVAC stack.

Would this flow well? Factored in to that is where to put the cooktop. Most houses in our neighborhood have it in the island but that brings its own issues with range hood and space. Could put it on the bottom right wall but this is far from the sink.

Also, do we need a prep sink? If so, where should it go?

If you can move the fridge over 6", or far enough to put the ovens beside it, then the cooktop could go just past the angle, with the prep sink on the section parallel to the sink wall. (The circle represents the prep sink--my Paint program doesn't draw angled boxes well.) I'd suggest moving the DW to the right of the sink. Sorry, this is rotated--click to enlarge:

Disadvantage is that the cooktop is far from the fridge. The cooktop could go on the island where I have 'main prep', then you could prep to the left of the clean-up sink, but I'm not a fan of cooktops on an island or peninsula. At least there would be no seating behind it.

I should add that there are no upper cabinets and that if we leave the cooktop in the island we would move it to the opposite side. Placement would depend on how much we can extend the island.

If I am reading your drawings correctly, you don't have the preferred triangle placement of fridge, sink, stove. Is this a remodel, or are you building this home from the ground up? If this is a new home, this kitchen seems way too complicated. Cooktop in an island, regardless of the decisions of your neighbors, is not optimum for most.

This is a remodel and you are correct about the cooktop placement. We would prefer to not have it where it is currently drawn. Would prefer it on the opposite side of the island somewhere near the sink.

Where would you suggest the cooktop go, if not in the island? The wall on the bottom right corner?

I suggest you put some money into infrastructure, and a professional designer.

You can always change the layout of the island and have the stove placed on the opposite side

The walls to the right are actually windows, the full length of the wall. We feel we can utilize the niche to the right of the HVAC stack as a pantry cabinet.

Claire, I agree that the cooktop should not remain where it is drawn. Do you feel the work area would be functional with it moved to the opposite side of the island, in the general area of the sink?

That is along the lines of what we were thinking. Possibly form a sort of L-shape or maybe calling an arc is a better term, but a shape that follows the lines of the walls.

Yes I do feel that it would be a more functional layout it would also come within NKBA guidelines
