Yep, he's on the cusp of not wanting Mom to create is space any longer. However, I'm in the camp that thinks a twin bed is not a bad idea, (you can order the extra long) because twin size is the norm once they go off to college. You can set up the bedroom with two twins if that works for your circumstance.

Of course, a bedroom that reflects his interests would be best whether that's a hobby or a sport.

I don't like loft beds or bunk beds unless you absolutely need it for space reasons (it is so much easier to change sheets and make a bed when they are on the floor). This room is big enough for a full or queen size, or a twin XL on the floor. I would vote for going that route. And then he can have a separate desk.

I'm not sure where you live, but if you have an Ikea, take him there and have him pick out something he likes. I was about 11 and my mom took me to Sears and had me pick out my own bedroom furniture. I felt like a real grown-up. ;) I'd also encourage a big bookcase (Kallax from Ikea) so that he can store his stuff.
