Why do these peppers grow straight up?

These seem like bell peppers. A friend gave these to me. She said she planted bell peppers. All the other 3 plants grow downward except for this one.
In the picture the pepper on the bottom started to droop. The to pepper had a strange shape. The big one in the middle shapes more like a bell and the bottom is a bit pointy.
