Painting - Where to stop?

Hello all,
We're thinking about repainting the ground floor of our new home. The entire house is currently a tan color and we're thinking about changing just ground level to a soft blue. The staircase to the second level is all ten, and the walls don't seem to have a natural break point for a color change.
The walls of the staircase extend all the way up into the second level, and it feels like painting the downstairs blue means the entire house must become blue. Is there a way to make a natural transition?

PRO9 years agoIMO the paint solution would be a neutral paint color, and add the blue color with art, furnishings, and accents. Why would you want to subject all your rooms to blue paint?

9 years agoIMO, this is the only way it works for me. That is a rather large bit of wall that extends into the space and the trim just stops. You have wainscoting everywhere else. The blue you are thinking would look nice with this beige( make sure they are compatible) and are similar in lrv level. Hang a larger painting on that stairwell wall that has some blue in it also.
8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI lived in a house where they painted the stairway a feature color. It looked great and made it more interesting. I see a lot of red in your decorations so maybe this could work? Just another idea to throw on the pile :-)
Note: I realize my blue doesn't match your inspiration photo. It was a limitation of my options, not an intentional disregard of your preferences.
