I just looked into this because someone else posted a similar question. Wood of any species decomposes much faster than bark from conifers like pine or fir, destroying the structure and acidifying the mix. The second post on this thread (by gardengal is more complete.

Actively decomposing wood products - like your fungal covered wood chips - will often tie up nitrogen during the decomposition process. As long as you are able to monitor the nutritional needs of your plants closely and supply additional N as required, you should be OK.

This is more speculation than assurance, as I have never tried this personally. And would most likely opt NOT to use the wood chips but hold out for the composted bark fines.
