You really shouldn't 'scoop the sides'of a frameless box. You can with framed cabinets...not frameless. Frameless support is all around the perimeter of the box. Frameless is at the four corners.

by notch you mean a full notch the width the cabinet wall?

would I necessarily face structural issues by essentially expanding the 30" to a 45" cabinet?

I was looking at this sink (which i guess i could get the 28.5" version, but that technically requires a 33" cabinet)

I think the 28.5 inch would work without notching. That is the exterior dimensions of the sink including the lip, so it should just fit. If you really want the bigger one, either get a bigger cabinet or you need to notch just the top a slight bit to allow for the lip. Look at the specs. Make sure you get a metal support strip for the front edge. Ikea sells them for extra support when installing sinks and cooktops.

You simply notch it only for the inches needed for the sink. I did the same with my 36" & 18" cabinet for my 45" sink.

I only cut down enough to rest the sink bottom. My cabinets are IKEA.

Yes you can make this work but it is a problem in getting the wrong cabinet for the area!!

You can scoop the center without any problems if you strap your sink in place. The strapped sink does the work the scooped cabinet used to. Hercules Universal Sink Harness (Braxton Bragg) or Sink Strap (Regent Stone Products).
