I am in love with the new dark floor look. However, if you have dogs it looks dirty much quicker than light floors. Speaking from experience. :) But, my swiffer is my BFF and fixes all foot and paw prints. Do you have any wood leftover to test? And if not, do you have an area where you could try two stains to see how it looks with your grain? I would try ebony (super dark, but awesome with your style and great with rug additions) or, for a darker shade than your brown, possibly coffee brown. I would definitely test somewhere though because sometimes a darker stain enhances the grain instead of covering it. It really depends on your wood and the lighting in your home. If you can't stain all of it, I don't think I'd do part a different color if it all comes together in one spot.

I like the color. Invest in 2 beautiful rugs instead. Going very dark will show every crumb, light colored dog fur. Bet dust bunnies aren't easily seen on your current floor color.

I think you have a beautiful shade of brown that will never go out of style....

I definitely agree with the previous posts. The wooden floors match the overall look of your home. I would stay with the wooden floors.

I agree that the color is lovely as is. Darker floors have been on the way out for a few years now-the maintenance is beyond what most people consider reasonable.

Totally agree, katinparadise. A friend of mine just had dark floors installed and they look dirty almost immediately after cleaning them. They magnify every particle of dust.

I agree that they are a great shade and tone and that 2 rugs would make all the difference.

Why not run down to the local homegoods and pick up two rugs just to try out that you can return the next day if you want. That way it costs you nothing and might save you a huge amount of money that you would've spent on re-staining your floors. Then if you like the rugs in general look, you can spend the time to find ones that really look great.

Wow I think those floors look lovely. Agree that anything darker will show every speck of dust. I like the rug ideas from others.

Thank you everyone for the advice! It's not so much the color, but the wood grain variation that I don't care for and if I'm not loving it I hate to do the same stain in the rest of the house. The floors are a little lighter in color than they appear in the pictures. I'm thinking of going with coffee brown or dark walnut. I would love to put down an area rug, but I hesitate to because I have 3 shih tzu's and one of them thinks any rug is a wee wee pad.

Try indoor outdoor rugs. I had an older female dog that would pee in the house so I feel your pain. But having an indoor outdoor rug helps

And i swear that having the rugs will make the grain less visible.

I'm not usually a big fan of the heavy grain texture but these look great!

I would definitely try out a sample board before you decide. What is the color that is on there now?

Personally I agree with your aversion to the grain being so pronounced..if you have sample pieces of the flooring or a spot to experiment I might suggest a grayish stain...rather than brown...this may drab down the light color so it is not so contrasting with the darker color

Was the grain of the wood noticeable before you had them refinished?

The gray may only decrease the gold highlights..and blend the colors better....in any case gray and beige tones are a common combo in today's design plans..sort of a fresh take on neutrals...and found everywhere in nature..

Short of experimenting with tonal stains..going darker may be the only option to blend the colors better...as to the "dark colors show dirt more" theory ..I think the grain will still show enough to diminish that worry...

I don't like the grains either, I'd have to go darker if it were my floors. I hope you post an update when you are done.

I just restained my red oak floors with dark walnut, looks great and it has made the grain less pronounced.

Update...So hard to pick a color!...trying to decide between coffee brown and a Jacobean/ebony mix. I have quite a few pieces from Broyhill's Attic Heirloom collection, which is why the drawer is in the photo. Help Houzzers!!

Do your samples have a coat of poly over the top or whatever you'll be using for a top coat? That's going to change the look of the stain as well. I definitely see a lot more red in the third picture down. If you don't like the idea of red, I think the 4th picture is your best bet.
