Leave the kitchen where it is…take down non-load bearing wall and make a new kitchen/dining area. Use the garage space for a family room.

That is pretty much what we did to our daughter’s cottage and it works well. Do something to the front of the garage wall, so it doesn’t look like a converted garage. We did windows and this picture gives you the idea of the layout.
