Stem canker?

last modified: 9 years ago

Hi everybody!

Here is my three years old, own root Cl. Stormy weather.

It has some weird looking dark brown branches. They were on this rose last year too.

And this spring they still shoot out some fresh juicy new growth.

Does it look to you like steam canker?

If so, what should I do to this plant?

And if it is canker, why plant still continues to grow, and even putting out buds?

Thanks!

To me it looks better than canker. Just the way the rose is behaving sounds hopeful. I would continue to observe. Sunburn? Do the dark areas go around the cane or just on the sunny side?

    Openmoon,

It is very possible that the coloration of the older stems of your Stormy Weather is normal for that variety. Some rose varieties have unusual cane/stem coloration, which is perfectly normal for that variety.

The abundance of large and small thorns I see on the canes and stems may mean there is Rugosa in the pedigree of Stormy Weather. Rugosas are extremely thorny, to the point of being almost dangerous....big and little thorns jammed all up and down the stems. The stem coloration we see may be another trait it also inherited from its Rugosa ancestor, which brown/tan/gray stem coloration is normal and healthy for a Rugosa, and consequently would be so for your SW, too.

The foliage and general growth of your SW appears to be very good, nothing abnormal.

Until someone who grows Stormy Weather responds, my best advice to you is keep up good care of SW, and do nothing until you are advised otherwise.

Truthfully, from what I can see in your photos, I believe there is nothing wrong whatsoever. I hope I'm right.

Thank you, guys for your responses.

Yes, the dark areas go around the canes. On some parts of stem, they look more intensive then on others. They really looked dead to me, not like my other roses. I was very tempted to cut them down during my spring rose pruning, but I have decided not to, when I saw green buds on them.

The flowers of my Stormy Weather smell a lot like Rugosa. This is one of the reasons, why I love this rose. Yes, I would think, it has some Rugosa genes in it.

Well, I can tell you that because of you, I am getting this one tomorrow as they are arriving at my garden center then. i LOVE LOVE the fragrance of this one as you described and yes one of my favorite fragrances too! I love that it's a climber and that it's cane come back every year..

Do you have to protect it at all? How much sun do you give it? Where in your yard is it planted...Thank you. The flowers look nice

Mike, Stormy Weather has survived a couple of winters well for me in zone 5, though not fully cane hardy, so I'm presuming it'll do fine for you without particular protection.

I agree with the above posters that what you're seeing is probably just mature cane on the rose that gets brown with age. In cold zones, we actually celebrate when we get a rose that can get canes mature enough to brown, since so many of them are pruned to the ground after winter. I get accustomed to judging live cane as "green", but plenty of healthy cane eventually turns a darker color. I'd not bother to prune anything unless you see signs of failing canes as Moses describes.

I do not winter protect my roses at all.

My Stormy Weather is planted along the fence and protected by it from cold winds.

It receives sun till 3 pm.

I can`t say this rose is spreading fragrance around, but if I stuck my nose in flower, I can smell it. Some folks in HMF say, that they didn't detect fragrance at all.

I think it is lovely rose. Despite the flowers do not stay long on the bush, at least they continually comming.

Thank you, guys for your time to answer my question.

I`m going to keep eye on this one.

Here are some flowering Stormy Weather pics from last year.

It looks fine to me, too. I do have SW,but they are very young plants. Still, I'll take a look at them if possible.
