Any suggestions to help give each the dining room and living room there own space or suggestions on arranging the furniture in living room space. We are getting a new dining room table, coffee table and end tables at some point and I'm not planning on keeping the canvas above the fireplace there. I would also love any input on a large area rug for the living room. As you can see we just moved in, and I'm open to any other input :-)

I would say forget trying to make it separate spaces and just focus all the furniture on the windows - that view is amazing!

A rug for the dining area would help as well as for the couch. I'd try something neutral with a flat weave for the dining area (because I'm a slob and need easy-clean), and something more interesting and plush for the sitting area.

    Wow, fabulous view.

Is the current orientation of the sofa and loveseat about the fireplace or about TV viewing? If TV, how many people usually watch at the same time? I ask because the layout doesn't seem optimized for either conversation or taking advantage of the view. I'm about to make suggestions that won't work for you if you want to have 4 family members watching TV at the same time.

I would arrange the sofa and loveseat at right angles to each other with the sofa facing the view and the loveseat facing the fireplace. I would get a rug to define the space (8x10 or 9x12). I might put a console table behind the sofa.

I would define the dining area with a second rug. My preference would be a rectangular table with the long axis parallel to the window (taking advantage of the view, again), assuming there's enough room.

Your floor and current furniture is all very similar colors. Not just all neutral, but not much variation in light or dark tones. Mixing in light and dark tones will add interest. If you like a neutral palette, adding black and white (or dark brown and off white) will do that. If you are open to more color, you can add additional interest that way.

    What styles/colors do you like?

Cawaps, thank you for your input. This TV is not our main TV, and would usually have only one or two people watching it at one time. I will definitely try the layout you suggested!

I definitely agree with you how everything kind of blends in. The love seat and sofa have to stay for awhile, but I think a new coffee table and end table will help with that for now. I like the idea of an accent chair to help bring in some color.

I would say my style is some where in between transitional meets rustic. As for colors, I tend to lean towards blues and neutral.

I don't think that the love seat and sofa matching the floor will be a problem if you add some contrast with the items you are already planning to purchase. I just wanted to point it out BEFORE you started shopping. :-)

Lucky you! What a gorgeous home and setting! I agree about cawaps with the furniture arrangement. And even though it might block a small bit of the bottom of the window to the left of the fireplace, I'd move the tv to the left side, either on that wall below the sconce or setting down low in that corner, on a short table or bench, so you can see the view, fireplace and tv all at the same time.

Blue will look wonderful with your furniture and floors; there are some great rug shoppers/hunters in this group, so if you want suggestions, just ask and people will post some wonderful choices for you.

If it would suit your style, maybe look for some pieces with some age - like a vintage table or coffee table to add some interest. Or a cabinet/bookcase, if you have space in the dining room. If that sort of thing appeals to you, start looking on craigslist or consignment stores for some things. Maybe even a round glass coffee table that will let the rug (the beautiful rug you're going to find) show through. It would look nice with the shape of your sofas and be something softer in contrast to the fireplace and angles of the windows and add some sparkle.

Acoustically I would imagine your room is SCREAMING for an area rug. I would make it a very large one defining the living area. I am not a fan of carpet under an eating area. I like the idea of the back of the couch with a sofa table behind making a sort of a wall where the living area ends. I suppose the balance would be off but I would play with putting the tv under the window on the other side of the fireplace. That way the furniture can be orientated to it..but also the view.

If it were mine, I’d put the TV angled in the left corner underneath the sconce. Then I’d place thelong couch on the right side of the fireplace, facing the windows, with the love seat directly facing the fireplace. Leave about a 3’ walkway behind the couch to the door on the right. Purchase an area rug large enough to put underneath both couch and love seat .

Dining could be where it presently is, yet you need a larger, longer, more dominant table and chairs.

If you want to introduce some rustic, a dining table in this style would work well. So many nice rustic pieces online. Google rustic on Houzz and you'll be busy for hours lol. Here's the photo
