My daughter chose the fabric and pattern for this table mat for the little table she has on her front porch. She lives in an early 20th century bungalow with an enclosed front porch. She and her husband devised this little table that folds down from the wall and can actually seat four. I made an oversized quilt top, sandwiched and quilted it, zigzagged the edges and then washed and dried it several times to shrink it before we cut it to size and bound it. I forgot to cut bias binding, but the curve was gentle enough to not cause any problems. The backing is a whimsical Minnesota-themed print with canoes and mosquitos in the same colors. I also made napkins to match the backing.

Here's what I came up with for place mats. I took your suggestion, Sharon, but arranged the rectangles in a brick pattern. I sewed four 6x6 squares together in random order and then cut them into 2" sections. I sewed them together to get four placements like this. I found four yards of matching blue fabric for $10 at the LQS that was closing. I'll use that for backing and binding. I feel good to have used up the excess fabric.

Very nice. Did you wash it several times to shrink it so it fit the top of the table perfectly with no overhang?

That's correct, Bev. Her space is very limited, and a tablecloth would be a problem. And placemats for four diners would overlap one another. Because of a bone-head calculating error, I have many six inch squares in the same fabrics cut. I'd like to make her a few placements to use when there are only two or three diners. I tried a disappearing 4-patch, but the resulting size didn't work very well. If anyone has an idea for a placemat pattern using six inch squares, I'd love to hear it. Maybe I could just sub-cut them into 2x6 inch rectangles and do something. I'd like to use them up. Most of the fabric was $16.99 organic cotton. Leave it to my daughter to choose the most expensive fabric there was and to me to miscalculate how much I needed.

Isn't it amazing the various patterns HSTs can make? Great job on the tablecloth. You might consider something like this to use up your extra squares for placemats. It was fun and of course, easy.

The things you learn as you go! I should have realized that the dot fabric (because the dots are in rows and not well-aligned with the fabric as it was cut) would ready very differently depending on how it was placed. I should have positioned all the 6" square blocks with the horizontal rows of dots running parallel with the 2" side of the rectangles after they were cut, not the long side. Some of them are, and they look good; others, not so good. Oh, well, done is better than perfect, right? And they will always have plates and glasses on them. Lisa was thrilled to get them.

Unless you needed to place them that way to get the size you wanted. Using as much of the scraps as you can is the real winner! :-)
