Every condo in my neighborhood has this design from the 90s. There are drywall "steps" above this gas fireplace situated between the living and family rooms. I'm not sure but think the fireplace vent is inside the "steps" so I don't think I can cut them down flat. I don't want to block the light between the two rooms by building it higher, either. Any suggestions as to what to do with the "steps" to make it look good?
