I'm not sure of what it is, but it is definitely NOT schinus molle.

Is it the OTHER pepper tree? Brazilian not California?

You don't want it, it seeds like mad to the point it is invasive, is very messy and isn't attractive. The California pepper sees like mad and is very messy but also is very attractive.

It is Schinus terebinthifolius, the Brazilian Pepper. Generally not a desirable garden tree.

Both varieties of pepper tree are considered invasive. The California pepper is not really native to California, but was introduced a few hundred years ago and became associated with a California rancho sytle of gardening. Consider a palo verede or desert willow instead.

The larger tree you buy, the more work you will have to put into getting it established. A smaller tree will transplant easier, and in a year or so, you won't be able to tell the difference between it and a larger more expensive transplant.

F.W.I.W. example shown - although appearing to be planted in the ground, at something like a sports complex and therefore, apparently not the boxed specimen referred to later in the thread - is heavily topped or broken and also has a visible girdling root going all the way around the trunk or nearly so. Two serious disadvantages for a new tree to start out with.
