I love my Domsjo sink! It's only been installed about six months and I have not dropped a cast iron pan in it - I don't know how it would fare under that scenario - but we have accidentally banged it with other pots and kids have been less than totally careful when doing dishes and it seems fine. Stray marks come right off with Barkeeper's Friend. I wouldn't say there is anything inherently fragile about this sink vs. others of the same material. If you needed insurance, buying a second one and putting it away "just in case" might ease your mind for not a ton of $$.

Also, we have plastic rubbery mats on the bottoms of the sink so dropped items would not really land hard on the sink itself. Got some clear ones at Walmart that fit perfectly.

PS I love my IKEA kitchen, too!

So there's another vote for the Domsjo if you are worried about damage/replacement. It's only about $300 and since it sits on top of the counter, replacement is not as big of a deal in terms of labor/complexity.

I guess I should consider buying an extra for the piece of mind but I would probably have to build a crate for storing it vertically! I am a little torn as on the other hand, at the cost of the two Domsjo sinks, I could probably get a very decent stainless steel sink, which would be impossible to break. I am not really concerned about dents or scratches...

I had TWO Domsjo sinks crack. (Double 36 inch). The first crack appeared randomly at the bottom right corner, about 5 inches and a hairline. I did absolutely nothing to create this and was mortified. Luckily after the heavy lifting - 1,5 drive to IKEA they did replace it. Second sink arrived, boom one week in and I suddenly had a massive crack from the faucet to the right sink drain hole. My heart sunk. We really think we did not over-thighten this faucet (we think, but I suppose that area is very thin and very delicate). Today we got our third sink. I love the look of this sink and we designed our kitchen for this to be main view... I am terrified that it will crack again. I am happy to know I am not the only one. I have to say, that this new sink has a minor imperfection (read crack) on the other side/facing the cupboard). What to do, Ikea is 1,5hrs driving and I do not want to lift this heavy beast one more time. I hope we are lucky now, I am going to continue to be extremely careful when I use it. Which is a shame because it is a sink, and a sink should be able to handle some beating (you know, dishes etc). Thanks for reading my blurb, not sure if I would recommend this sink to anyone.

I don't know if the Kohler Whitehaven will fit - it has a "short apron" and a "tall apron" style. It is cast iron. It could potentially chip, but that is the worst. I had a cast iron sink 20 year before my currant Whitehaven without a chip - but I don't throw my pots at my sink either:)

These sinks have been carried by Ikea for quite some time butnto be honest I do not understanf this facination with farmhouse sinks . Get a good stainless sink it will last forever and always be in style.

Yes, all is level on our end. We now installed it again and added a little piece on the back, for extra support instead of just the two sides. We also bought another faucet. My husband is a construction professional and has installed several sinks, but this is the first ceramic kitchen sink.

Our sink recently cracked as well. The sink has been discontinued. Ikea said any new sink they come out with will NOT be the same size This sink cannot support the weight of a garbage disposal. A replacement is not available anywhere as far as I can tell. I have done extensive research. I had 3500 worth of quartz countertops made to fit this sink. There is not a replacement in the same size anywhere. I got a quote for a custom sink and that was over $4000. Any other sink would require me replacing my countertops. I would love to hear from others and their solutions to the problem.

Post a drawing of your tops, sink base cabinet dimensions, existing sink, and I'll tell you what your alternatives are, if any, besides custom.

Since I had started this thread I feel that I should post an update. I ended up installing a Domsjo sink. It's been about 6 months since I did it and so far it's been good. I deliberately chose not to install a garburator to avoid extra risk. I am still questioning my decision but hoping it will be OK.

I am going thru the worst case scenario right now. A large crock pot was dropped in the Domsjo 2 bowl apron sink, and BROKE the right side of the sink. Ikea has no stock and the sink they will be replacing it with will not be the same size. (97cmx69cm)

It seems that all other apron sinks are a touch narrower and no where near as deep (front to back). Which means that i will need counter work and tile work to make anything else look somewhat

decent. I did not get any extra pieces of the Quartz counter top but i fortunately have some extra tile.

I am in a pickle. The only avenue i have left to check is custom sinks.

Any suggestions?

He will hopefully see your post and respond. I am guessing that it might be possible to get a piece of quartz and seam it across the back of the sink area to make a proper size cut out for another apron front sink, though you might be limited on your choice of sink. However, I could be wrong and Joe's the expert.

The cabinet is 36" wide. The sink cuts the countertop in two independent pieces and rests on the top of it. For me it was one of the reasons I chose it because it made the countertop much cheaper and allowed me to have a seamless corner piece in my L-shape kitchen.

I tried very hard to find a potential replacement but to no avail. I don't think it exists.

I just saw the reply to this. IKEA let me have the floor model of the sink, so I am having mine replaced with the floor model tomorrow. I bought a new garbage disposal, only 1/2 HP, as some other people have suggested. I am hoping this one doesn't crack. Thank you for your response, Joseph Corlett.

I wanted a domsjo sink-but they had already been discontinued. There are still some at random stores-for example if you know anyone in Salt Lake City who could go pick one up for you. Unfortunately IKEA won't ship from their stores. I guess I was lucky after all.....

We bought this sink last year for a Reno. Doing our backsplash tonight and my husband, after cutting all the tiles around the sink, wanted me to go online tonight to order a “just incase one”. Couldn’t find it. Doing some research and came across this. For real!? They discontinued it?

Scott, I don't know the style of your kitchen so this may not work visually, but have you considered an antique drainboard sink? The ones from the 50's were also countertop-replacing sinks like the Domsjo, in that they go front to back and have a finished front edge. It's not an apron front option but it is a front to back option. They are available from salvage shops or on ebay. (There's a company out of Louisiana that refinishes chipped porcelain models with a sprayed acrylic finish and lists them on ebay)

I was planning my low budget kitchen remodel around the Domsjo sink but fortunately I haven't made it past the planning stage. Since my home is farmhousey I'm going to go for an antique sink instead.

Here's my Domsjo drama. Bought cabinets and sink at Ikea in 2015 and installed including garbage disposal. I had Ikea's quartz counters installed by their recommended affiliate. As said, it was the centerpiece of our kitchen and we loved everything about it. This week my wife noticed the cracks (see photos). I went to Ikea and showed them the photos. The cracks are continuing to propagate and I've placed a support under the disposal to attempt to avoid a catastrophic failure that could result in injury or a flood.

The Domsjo is discontinued and they won't have an exact replacement. They refunded all of my money for the sink and told me that if I pick out a replacement sink they would pay to have a new sink installed including modifying the quartz countertops to accommodate it. I'm still looking for one that would fit and am afraid that stainless may be my best option.

I'll post again when I have things resolved.

Update, I posted a review of the Domsjo sink in Ikea.com and got the following email response. They don't elaborate on exactly what "Privacy Policy" I violated. I gave the sink 1 star but mentioned that I gave Ikea 5 stars for customer service.

My husband was installing our Domsjo double apron sink this past Saturday, with company company over the next Day for Easter brunch. Both back corners cracked off. It was not dropped and nothing hit them. Literally just cracked. I was devastated! And yes absolutely no where to be found. PS our new counters are in as well. Epic fail for IKEA!

We have had our IKEA Domsjo sink for approximately 1 year. Last weekend I noticed very long hairline cracks starting at the corner and extending around to the front. Have emailed customer service with no response to date. I am very nervous after reading these posts. Hopefully a replacement would fit into the spot that was custom made for this sink!

Towards the end of the thread there is some discussion of what can be done when a Domsjo fails. First is to try to find a piece of your countertop that can go across the back from side piece to side piece. If you have a quartz or stone, you might call some fabricators and see if anyone has a scrap and will cut and seam it for you. Then the Kohler Vault apron front sink, which is stainless steel and has a drop in version, might be made to fit. The drop in version helps make the sides meet. It also comes in a "short apron" as well as "tall apron" - might need the short apron, but check the specs. The Kohler Whitehaven is a cast iron under mount sink that also comes in a "short apron" style. However, I don't know how it works side to side as a replacement for the Domsjo. Like the Vault, you will need to seam in a piece of countertop in the back. It might end up cheaper, depending on your countertop to replace a portion of countertop - depending on if that can be done and match the older. Many are upset at Ikea right now about this situation.

*Update*

After much searching and planning for replacements, I was able to locate a used Domsjo. It has all the scratches and stains you would associate with a used product but it sure saved alot of headache. I was able to swap the sinks in 4 hrs and most of that was getting the old one to release without scratching or breaking the countertop and backsplash. Still love the looks and style of the Domsjo. I am happy that it worked this way however I know if something happens to this one that I will be doing a full countertop and sink replacement.

I have 3 different installed Domsjo sinks ... one double and two single. The double, which is my kitchen, after 4 months a glass tipped over in the sink as I was washing it. That was 3.5 years ago and have yet to find a solution ... other than stick a paper towel in the hole and not use the sink. So pissed, still!

Considering LocTite spray foam.

I am in the middle of a kitchen reno and I purchased a used single bowl Domsjo from someone and I love it, however I have the counter top company coming next week to measure for quartz countertops and I am terrified I'm going to regret installing this sink... now after reading some of these reviews im really considering going with another choice.

Don't install that sink, please. There are plenty of excellent undermount sinks available with new quartz tops.

Yes, I've decided to go with a different option. I just hate that I already purchased this domsjo.. im sure it will save me some trouble in the long run though. If anyone here is stuck with a damaged Domsjo and needs a replacement, I would love to try and help!

I bought a domsjo sink and it is lovely to look at but....I woke up one morning after a year and it had a large crack. no crockery broken ,(tho I did break a glass and cup handle at beginning whilst getting used to it) and my pans are induction hob pans so not that heavy. Ikea were really unhelpful and denied manufacturing responsibility ,( which I don't think they should have done) and thus warranty and at the same time discontinued the line and replaced it with a different shaped sink which would have required a different work top size cut out and in my view not as nice. No suggestions at all were given as to what I might do except contact mediation. I thought about a solicitor letter but in the end life is short and I found Mendebath did a great job (for anyone in a similar situation) for less than the cost of the letter...though more than the cost of the sink. The Ikea unhelpful attitude in this situation would make me personally think twice before buying again from them....
