Hi,

We were originally going to do baseboards of 5.5 inches and casing for doors and windows of 3.5 inches. It turns out that in many places, our casing can only be 2.5 due to adjacent walls or other doorways. On the top level (3 floor townhouse), some of the doors can only have 1.5 inch casing, so we are going to use 1.5 for all of the doors on that level to be consistent. All baseboard and casing will be 3/4 inch thick, white, totally plain to match shaker doors. We are planning to do the butt joint (thanks to all of your help). The top of the doors and windows will be flush but will go up one size from the sides (so, a door with 2.5 sides will use a 3.5 top).

So our questions are:

1. Can we still use 5.5 baseboards if the casing will only be 2.5 in most areas?

2. On the upper floor where we will use 1.5 casing, can we still use the 5.5 baseboards, or should we drop them to 3.5 for that level? (We weren't able to find 4.5)

3. Could this actually be a good thing as maybe the thin casing will make our 8 ft ceilings appear taller?
