Mid-century modern? I like the black posts and glass idea. I would personally paint the stucco a very dark grey. Would also update the exterior lights to a long stainless steel cylinder style. I would keep the cedar. And relocate the shed, or paint it to blend in, it really jumps out visually right now.

Mid century definitely but probably built closer to the 70s or early 80s. Please leave the cedar! Refinish it if it is salvageable. We just spent a small fortune to update our mid century with horizontal clear cedar siding. Paint your brown toned stucco a nice light grey color. Don't do glass railing, it doesn't fit the mid century theme. Instead, go for a cable railing or a horizontal aluminum railing.

I suggest you do some google image searches of mid century cedar homes and educate yourself on the design theme. Your home has great bones!

Ooh...I like chalet! And it fits, because your house reminds me of these 1965-built condos my family used to rent in Aspen when I was a kid that are classified in MLS listings as contemporary style. So I'll say contemporary chalet. :)

Where is the house? It is a Contemporary. Mid Century modern morphed into this style in some areas, so it's interesting to find out the location. It was very popular on the west coast and called "Westcoast Contemporary" around here. These houses are vernacular, so look to the natural materials in your area when thinking about updates. Cedar is good – part of the style. I love this style very much and used to own one.

thank you everyone for your wise comments. Modern chalet, Westcoast Contemporary? interesting observations! I was torn between mid century modern, and contemporary. home was built in the late 70's. We will be doing a complete reno/restoration, and so plan to repair/replace the cedar, also we will be replacing all of the glass with charcoal coloured windows- similar to what the home has now, but newer glass. the light suggestion is great thank you for that suggestion.

we are located in Canada, so we are not able to use cable/horizontal railings as our code does not allow it.( if a child could climb it it is not allowed) this is why we were thinking glass with aluminum black railings? the big question is what color to paint the stucco? any other suggestions/options?here is a picture of the back of the property to further identify the style. Originally it had cedar shakes which were replaced by the previous owner.

I would love to cover up the stucco - it is too rough and is dated IMHO.

Imagine those areas being covered with large cement panel squares or rectangles - metal divots would add more interest. Light gray or off white with the natural cedar siding will look amazing.

The diagonal detail on the garage doors is also a very recognizable "contemporary" feature. Unfortunately you won't find a lot of information about that style on line, but everything that is simple, modern and local (I mean materials) will work in your case. I think the stucco will have to stay some shade of grey, you can go darker or lighter depending on what you are going to stain the cedar. You should watch the movie "coast modern" http://coastmodernfilm.com/ to get more into the philosophy behind your house. Alberta is close enough to BC.

The previous owners replaced the shakes with a 35 year architectural shingle that is towards the brown tones.
This is somewhat limiting as the stucco colour would need to complement the new roof.

Look at some warmer greys to bridge the cedar and the roof. I think you should start by deciding what you are going to do with the wood and worry about the stucco later. Cedar siding is really expensive, so if you are keeping yours and just refinishing it you will have a certain colour palette available to you, but if you are getting new wood, you could do more colours. Also, I hope you are planning on getting rid of that bush right by the deck. It really messes up the look of the house.

1970s lodge, at best approximation. I think following a midcentury aesthetic will keep you in a decent direction, as I don't think we're quite at a point yet where the 70s is treated as a venerated historical moment to be conserved. :)

Somebody above noted the "vernacular" finishes -- here, in the woodsy setting (and especially with a brown-toned roof), I think you need to keep the stucco in a warmer earthy set of tones, rather than taking it gray. You could go a bit darker, or shift the shade a bit, but I wouldn't go way off... And honestly, while I love cable railings, the cedar is part of the woodsy "lodge" look, so it would be ok to keep that too, at least for the time being, until you get done with all the inevitable interior projects.

Since you are a fellow Canadian, check out Iron CA207 by Cloverdale paint. We put this on our house 3 years ago and get a ton of compliments. Has held up really well.
