Proper staking technique?

i need to switch out my stakes for longer ones. Do I drive it right through the rootball next to the trunk?

Depends. Are you staking for stability, raising a weeper or what? A pic would help.

A few of both need longer stakes, weepers and uprights. I attempted to hammer a stake thru a cupressus root ball the other day but I couldn't bring myself to do it because there was so much resistance.

sometimes all you need is to tie stake to already sturdy stem to go longer

need a pic ... usually.. if working with say... bamboo ... if your upgrading needing another foot or two ... you just slide it in the same hole.. going from say.. a half inch bamboo.. to a 5/8 .. which gets you the extra foot or so ...

what i dont get is when you say: drive it right through the rootball ... it comes to mind. you want to drive a 2 x 2 ... where there was a 1/4 inch stake before..

whats the scope of this???
