Thanks @BeverlyFLADeziner! I had read that thread (and others on the subject) but people kept pointing out that it made a difference what type of wood you want to treat so I was a little lost amidst all the suggestions.

I agree a wax finish would be a nice choice.

Wax, though attractive, is a never ending chore on a table. I kept an electric buffer in my car to deal with a client's coffee table that I had waxed, and I buffed it each and every visit to her home.

I'd use Danish Oil - easy (and quite therapeutic) to apply and works a treat.

When Irish/English pine antiques were all the Hamptons rage in the nineties......I used a ton of Brie. Never had to buff. Ever. Used to warm it, apply liberally let it soak in.....buff and enjoy. Most of it soaks in and leaves a soft luster behind. Learned it from an antiques dealer whose shop was a treasure trove .

I have used boiled linseed oil on numerous refinished pieces. I find it easy to work with and I like the low sheen. BUT I'm not sure about the coloring on your piece. My pieces were darker oak and the oil enhanced their patina.

I suggest looking at minwax polyacrylic. It is known to seal without changing color - no yellowing as with polyurethane. I have used it on painted pieces that take a beating. It did not change the color, has offered great protection, and is easy to wipe clean.

Anything you use, it will change the look either in color or sheen. If you want to keep the color, you can check Ecos water based varnish. If you want more depth to the look of the wood, look for an oil based finish, such as Seal-a-cell

Looks like it is pine, with a slight pickling stain.
Can purchase stain to touch up scratches and such, if u don't want to have to refinish, polish every 6 months, u can go with water based polyurethane finish. It is clear and u can get a relatively flat finish ( meaning not glossy). It will say on can.
