Very pretty console. Are you hanging vertical or horizontal? If vertical, I'd look for something about as wide as the center portion of the console. Height in proportion to the width, so hard to say. And the hanging height kind of depends on the size of the mirror along with the type of frame it has. It also will depend on what you will be placing on the top of the console.

You might have to do a mock up with cardboard to see what looks good in the space. Some of these seem a little large for a bedroom, but you can get an idea of how the size/shape/frame affects the placement. You might also consider round.

@Olychick -- thanks. I was really planning to do a rectangular mirror hung horizontally (if horizontally, how wide it should it be?). However, if people think it is better to go vertically or a different shape, I am open to thoughts.

The last pic i posted of the rectangles is horizontal, so you can kind of get an idea of what size in relation to your table might look good to you. I guess I was thinking because of your higher ceilings, you might want to go vertical to help fill some of that space above.

I think size really is going to depend on the visual heft of the mirror, frame, etc. I'd find other pics you like and see what percentage of the width of the console the mirror covers. And think about what will be on the table. If there will be a lamp, or something tall, will you want it inside the frame or outside, etc.

The one thing I'd want to be sure of is that when you look at yourself in front of the mirror your head won't be cut off.

If you're gonna hang the mirror horizontally, I'd look for something about 50-60% as wide as the table. But cardboard mock up will definitely help.

After seeing various opinions here and in Design Dilemma, I am leading towards putting the mirror vertically. I am though having hard time find an appropriate mirror. So far I'm leaning toward this one:

After looking at the above photos, I like the vertical mirrors much better and it would also help you to see more of yourself than a horizontal one. The one above is very nice, simple and classical.

I'm glad people think the mirror I found is appropriate. I am inclined to go with it (unless I come up with something better) and in a vertical orientation. Though I'm not so concerned about seeing more of myself as there is a full length mirror on the back of the room's door.

eta: I just noticed it's 31" wide. How does that compare to the center part of your console?

Isn't 2/3 the width of the table a common practice?

Your best bet is to do a cardboard mock up and see how the sizes work. If you are having other items (like a lamp I mentioned before) you may be able to go smaller than if the table will only have low things on it.

I'll try to find some cardboard to do a mock up. But if it looks right, where do I find a mirror that large? And, no there won't be any lamp or taller items on the table.

Try a mock up of the mirror size you posted above. It might be fine size-wise. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules about it. It's all what's pleasing to the eye - your eye!

You can also use painter's tape to tape out the sizes on your wall instead of cardboard.
