Washing machine with removable outer casing?

Hi all,

I am in search of a washer/dryer pair for my parent's house. Laundry is located in the basement and the staircase is very narrow, with the concrete wall protruding, making maneuvering very difficult! The current pair was put down there about 18 years ago. The installers removed the outer casing to get down the stairs and reassembled in place. We are having a hard time either finding a set that is less than 24" wide or one with a removable casing. There are 6 people in the household, and two dogs, so a small capacity set is not ideal.

The current pair has been repaired several times and at this point it is better to replace - although maybe not if we can't find anything!

Any leads or ideas are appreciated!

Toploader or frontloader wanted? What brand/model is the old unit?

No pref on top or front loader. Assume top loader would be more conducive to taking apart but have no idea! Currently have a top loader. Maytag or Whirlpool. I will see if I can get make/model.

An 18-yo Whirlpool or Maytag toploader is constructed differently than current machines. I don't know that any current toploaders (or frontloaders) have fully-removable outer cabinets. Maybe Speed Queen. Frontloaders typically are deeper than toploaders. Unlikely any are 24" width or less except maybe a unitary stack set or a compact frontloader.

24 inches max would dictate looking for a machine that makes the cabinet side wrap in 4 pcs to be certain. Good chance that one piece three sided cabinet wrap might be able to be worked through sticking one side through then rotating the rest to get it in depending on wall proximity to door frame.

I took a used older SQ dryer and FLW and broke it down to get through a small door in a basement once. The machines that were in the basement were from the 1960s or 1950s I think based on appearance. It's no small chore, and was a 3-4 hr job and note if the machines had been new, the warranty would have been waived. So yes, can be done. The dryer was easiest and lightest. The FLW was a chore. Never fell apart, so I think I torqued all the joints OK when putting back together. I left the back panel attached to the base on the dryer and removed the sides and top and front panels. To make the dryer job a bit easier, I left the wiring in place between the top and rear and walked the two through the door with an assistant.
