To make a glaze, use 3 parts Valspar glaze with 1 part Minwax stain over a satin finish in a color of your choice. Don't do this if you are using chalk paint. The chalk paint is to porous for the glazing technique, it will just suck it up and it wont go on even and it will be hard to even it out. Its best to use regular latex paint if you want to glaze.

Post pix of your real kitchen so I can see what doors you currently have, please. You can add simple trim to flat doors.

I think with the crevices in my cabinets the stain would have the effect I am wanting.

I would have a professional painter look at the doors before you start. They may have a clear coat on them that will not allow the glaze to adhere.

You will find that there are a dozen ways to achieve the look you desire. Even if they do have a top coat, the glaze will only need adhere in the crevices, and then you will wipe off most of it everywhere else. I like the SW glaze which you can mix with paint your self at about 3 parts glaze one part paint, or they will tint it for you. And you will just have to decide to go warm or more black/gray. You can take off a cabinet door, do some glazing on the back, prop it up and see if the tone makes you happy or not.
I think you could also get a more updated look by changing out the hardware... and since you don't want to paint, you can limit your choices to ones that will fit in the same holes, or at least cover up the holes, even if you want to change out the hinges. Black hardware maybe?

Are these painted or are they a factory finish? If factory these are most likely not painted but a baked on laminate type finish that will be tough to glaze. It will not take the paint or glaze like a true painted wood. Go cautiously.

The hardware is all going to be redone as well. I do not like the hardware on it currently. Thanks for all the advice! It will be worth trying!
