I think the cabinets would look good painted in a white that would go with the white in the granite.

start by painting the island. I actually do not mind the wood pattern but there is a whole lot of grey in the countertop and backsplash and you can not change that. Have you considered painting the window frames themselves or the molding surrounding the windows a color, mabye the same color as the island? If you paint the island black you still have a situation of limited color scheme since the appliances are black (i don't mind black appliances so try not to drink the stainless koolaid). Looks like you have a blueish gray coloration within the granite, so have you considered a deep blue-black for the island? it would work with your gray tile.

The granite has a lot of amber, taupe, gray, white, red, brown and black in it. The backsplash is actually a creamy yellowish color. Hard to tell from the photos. Thanks for your comments!

I have been kicking around painting the island black and the perimeter cabinets white since both color go well with the granite.

We recently did a black dye stain on oak cabinets just like yours and it turned out awesome. The way the stain integrated with the raised grain was such a great look and very unique. I wish the picture did it justice.

I just finished adding white cabinets to my kitchen and have granite in your colors...I picked a brown/gray puddy color for my walls to tie in the walls with the granite. Hope this helps!

Almost forgot...think about adding translucent glass to some of your kitchen doors...the front panels pop out and any glass dist. can cut glass to fit for about $20.00 or less per door. Be sure to get a professional to paint your doors or rent a paint sprayer.

It might be nice to do a Gray driftwood stain on the wood floor. It needs to be grounded.The white trim around the windows does nothing for them I would do a paint color that is a shade or 2 lighter then the wall color.
You could also stain the cabinets gray….

what beautiful counter tops! But they are completely lost because its too similar to the color of your cabinets. I would seriously think about refinishing those cabinets with a darker stain and a glaze. It would add some charm if you changed the hardware to cups on the drawers and fill in the holes where the current knobs are.
You could try doing a darker diamond shaped marble tile or 4" x 4" Backsplash!! take out the 4" Do a natural stone like marble tile on a diamond grid. It will lengthen the room.. by taking out the 4" you will get a better effect from the tile.
I wouldn't do white cabinets unless you are planning on getting all new appliances.
White is the big thing now but it might be a time cliche. If you paint, you will have to always paint, if you stain, you can always sand down and tweak it.

That counter top looks like a Bordeaux.. maybe Crema Bordeaux? or River Bordeaux? Super gorgeous! go dark and it would look much better with the counter top and your existing appliances. If you have to do white.. just do it on the island. For the floor.. do a lighter gray with a cobble stone look on a windmill pattern.

Wall paint is "Westover Hills" by Kelly-Moore...it ties the walls to the granite so that the focus is on the white cabinets. I have a 4" granite lip like you do around the walls and did not use a blacksplash, instead, I used latex enamel paint with low shine...spills and splash wipe right off. Skip a backsplash and use your money elsewhere. If you decide to stain your cabinets black, use black oil based paint and thin down with mineral spirits and wipe on cabinets after sanding. I stained my oak dining table that way since I could not find a black stain that would "grab" the hard oak wood. It worked perfectly and I sealed it with a clear seal. I used hardwood floors in the kitchen...they are called "bleached" hardwood floors, but the refinishers actually used white stain to achieve the bleached look. So easy to clean with a swifter mop and an old, slightly damp, washcloth attached. I think the white with black combo is a good idea for the cabinets and the island. I went with all white cabinets, but could have used the black with white, too. At the time, black cabinets were the rage, but I went with white and glad that I did, since I just read that white is best for re-sale value. Something to consider.

How about a dark stain like a Tudor oak. It's not quite black, still has a warm tone, and the grain will show.

What are you thinking of replacing the flooring with? Have you seen the Karndean vinyl plank flooring? It is so real looking, you just about have to get down on the floor and poke at it to see that it's vinyl. Here's a link -

Start with changing the island to black. I love the idea of stain rather than paint! Then decide what you want on the wall cabinets. This is definitely a 1st world problem since your cabinets are pretty awesome as they are & you have granite counter tops!

Love love your granite. Good job. Have cabinets stained cream, with a glaze. Replace hardware with brush nickel. Do all the same. Will be striking with that granite. Floors wood, do floors run into other rooms? If so keep all the same. The dark to light wide planks are very in now. Also the reclaimed wood that is a blue, gray whitewashed looks is fun. Lightens up a room. Look and bring home samples hold next to cabinet color.

The hardware you have would work too. To save money.

If painting try a gray.

Love travisinteriors idea for cabinets. But I would do a classic wood floor, anything that is very "in" now will someday be very "out".

pattiegoode, thank you so much for the compliment on the cabinets. They 10 years old and look brand new that is why I am so hesitate to change the color of them. I am also tossing around just getting a new backsplash so I can remove the 3 inch granite backsplash... i think that makes it dated looking.

travisinteriors,We have bruce hardwood floors in butterscotch through most of the main level so I would use the same in the kitchen. I don't think the granite is as gray in person as it is in my pics. it is more taupe and brown with amber and gray green black markings.

pcmom1, I am not overly trendy, I like things that don't go out of style... unfortunately my granite is trendy. I too like the idea of staining the island black.
I think it would break up all the orange tones.

Adrianne, you must have read my mind, i was just thinking this morning about staining the cabinets a bit darker so the granite would stand out more. What do you think about a brownish cherry stain? The granite is called Pompei. It has a really high gloss that is absolutely beautiful and not very pores like some other granites. BTW, I love the cup pulls.

I have just completed a Showplace Wood Product- Renew kitchen in a Light Mocha with an Ivory glaze. It is absolutely beautiful! The light mocha is leaning on the brown side which seems to go with everything. It would look great with your granite.

The island would look nice in a contrasting color or it could stay the wood color, maybe glaze in with a black or brown glaze. Or keep the perimeter cabinets the wood and just paint the island or combination around the room in strategic areas like photo below.

Wall color/ Paint tip- I always wait a pick the wall color at the end. You might want a color the is more of a contrast, or something more subtle that goes away. It is hard to know until everything is selected.

Special note: The cup pulls require two holes that will not line up with the existing holes. You will need to putty the holes, but be aware they could still show.

I think the cabinets painted in an Antique white with a glaze mixture of 50% van dyke brown and 50% burnt umber would be stunning. Most of the glaze should be wiped off changing the cabinet color slightly and sitting in the crevices. If you look at some of my photos, especially kitchens you will see this combination. I would paint the island with a base color in the amber family, then have them add a second coat in gray and sand off around the edges. I think you should consider hardwood floors to add warmth and ground everything else.

Wyland, my first initial thoughts were to paint or stain the island black and the desk and overhead cabinet on the opposite side of the kitchen (not show in my pics) and keep the perimeter cabinets as is. Maybe change the backsplash (it was what I picked 10 yeas ago when we built the house - I am not committed to it.) Thank you for your suggestions!

Why do you feel your granite is trendy? It's fabulous and definitely not "big box store". Dark / black stained island is good place to start. Consider cork for the flooring. Tin backsplash in color to match your hardware would be fun and classic. After these changes think about lightening the rest of the cabinets with a mocha glaze.

First thing, find your refinish man.. make sure he is reputable and has been in business a long time. Get his samples of what he can do. Ask what kind of varnish he uses a good one should take all of your fronts to his shop and do a cat. varnish
For color, I'm personally in love with any dark walnut stain (because I like grays) but with your granite you could go either way. Get the samples, make sure they are the same wood as what you have because different stains pick up differently in different woods. Don't put the sample on your granite and look down, lay the sample on your existing cabinet or have someone else do it and stand back to look at it.. (the angle has a huge effect). The one that will work best should pop out,, like no question pop out. It's always best to get something in the room and seen under your lighting.
Seriously think about just doing the island as the accent, Islands are easier to replace than all of your upper and base cabinets.. if the whole "accent" thing becomes a time cliche.

That little backslash should just be silicon caulk, You should be able to pop it off with an exacto knife run it around the edge and pop it out. Those things are suppose to be a cheap temporary fix anyway.. maybe keep those pieces if you are picking out paint.

Trendy granite would be Venetian Gold, Santa Cecilla, Giallo Santos,, Gillao ornemental, tropic brown, Verda Ubba Tubba. Trendy granite is "contractor grade" these are the most common and you will find the buyers are young couples buying new homes and exhausted mentally and financially from all the choices they have and they just go with the cheapest granite.. just because it is granite. I personally find the people that pick out the best granite are baby boomers doing a remodel or buying their retirement home.

I thought bold granite is now out and plain quartz is in.... I guess I am wrong. I am taking everyone's ideas into consideration. Thank you for all of your input. =)

After several years of trying to decide how to decorate around the busy granite and searching high and low for new flooring for the kitchen, I finally found something that I really love.

Here is the after kitchen with new porcelain tile flooring. Most people said to do a light colored floor but I have to say I am now loving the busy granite with the dark floor. Everyone who saw it in person said the dark floor was the way to go. Thanks for all your advice Houzzers!
