Hardwood flooring

I have three questions regarding our prefinished wood flooring:
1- can I use the Swifter with the "wood" cleaner?
2- we have a dog bowl ( water and food)- I was wondering if mats from LL Bean called "waterhog" is ok to put on the flooring
3- Design question: we laid hardwood flooring in the kitchen and preparing to lay it in the adjoining family room. The flooring installer suggested that you typically lay the floor the long way.If we do that, it would be laying the floor perpendicular to the kitchen. I thought I should continue in the layout we have so it would flow. So, I am questioning the direction we should lay the floor.

Hi Pam, congrats on your remodel. For hardwood flooring, they like to lay the boards perpendicular to the plywood underneath, if there's any plywood underneath. Otherwise, it's purely an issue of the looks. Photos, please ?

Hi- we have had an L.L.Bean waterhog mat on our hardwood floors for a couple of years and it has been fine. Periodically, I flip it up to clean underneath because any dirt underneath it will scratch the floor.

Just thought that I would mention that we also have a few rooms where the flooring is laid on a diagonal. The shape of the house resulted in it happening naturally. When I install my dining room floors though, they will mimic the kitchen but be perpendicular to the living room. Not sure how to solve that!

Flooring direction changes are handled with a "header". A piece laid at a door or other transition area parallel to one floor and perpendicular to the other (or at an angle). Typical hardwood installation is perpendicular to the joisting (the thick boards that hold up the floor). That direction generally results in the floor going the long direction of the room. This can be a flexible installation rule, not an absolute.
