There is a very long paw paw thread on this forum. Search for it and read through it. I have no advice for although I'll be planting some when I move to GA.

Even paw paw trees, the ones bought from online nurseries usually are about 2-3 ft tall. Pawpaw is slow in growing. Not a tree for the impatient.

Even when you buy two trees, they may not flower the same year. Pawpaw seems to need help with cross pollination to be more fruitful.

I have personally tried Allegheny, Susquehanna, and Shenandoah (also tons of wild fruit). Allegheny and Susquehanna are both very rich flavored with orangish/yellow flesh. Both were excellent, IMO the Allegheny had a slightly stronger flavor but the fruit is much smaller. The Shenandoah has pale yellow flesh, was also very sweet but the flavor was more subdued. Dont bother with any unnamed varieties or wild seedlings. Flavor is all over the place (some are ok and some are downright disgusting with turpentine like flavor). I planted an Allegheny and a Susquehanna last year but both were killed over the winter from the strange 80 degree days in Feb. followed by a snow storm a few weeks later. :(

I've got about 16 wild paw paws started and a few varieties. I really hope the wild ones taste better than you indicated Paul when they start producing but I guess worst case I can graft onto them.

Some wild are pretty good but most I tried were fair to gross. The pulp near the skin and seeds of some have a bitter off-putting flavor. These wild fruits were picked in MD and WV along the Potomac River. If your seedlings are from a different area of the country the quality and flavor may be different from what I have experienced.
