Both plants are under-fertilized. Fertilizing once may or may not have been appropriate, but I don't know what a chicken meal fertilizer is. Maybe you mean bone meal from chickens? It doesn't sound like composted chicken manure, or ground up chicken waste products from a processing plant or kitchen. The composted manure could work if that is your choice. Post the commercial specs of the fert for us and several always have good opinions, or let us know how you made it. But yes, your plants are lacking assimilable food at first sight. Nitrogen, for sure.

Labrador: I think you hit the nail on the downspout. In central CA, we got all-time record rainfall this year. Last year, I amended the heck out of the soil, but I did not consider the washout due to getting 21" of rain in a season...

I will go get some fertilizer. Will probably find a non-hippie fert this time.

Agree with what has been said. They are stressed probably from lack of food. How's the soil? Loose? have you successfully grown tomatoes in that soil before?

I've grown tomatoes in this soil for as long as I've lived here-5th season, I reckon. Last year, I added lots and lots of organic matter to the soil, in preparation for a fruitful season.

This last year-as I said-we got 21" of rain and there is lots of drainage running through this bed. Best guess is that most of last years amending was rendered moot.

So I'll go hit them hard with some veggie fertilizer. I have some other plants who are not looking very good, either. My lettuces and cukes and chilis on another part of the same plot are doing OK, but the plants in the front part look a bit weak.

I agree that it looks undernourished, but have the temperatures been good? Cold temperatures will slow tomato growth way down. If it has been unseasonably cool, that could be responsible. The plants could look stunted. Not sure why, if they are in the same bed, one would be well fed and the other not. That's a bit odd.

It is certainly true that lots of water running though the bed will effectively leach soluble nutrients.

I'm rolling with the leeching hypothesis for now.

Weather has been as temperate as you'd expect for 9A. 70's-low 90's.
