I painted cabinets in my old kitchen and wanted the hinges brushed nickel. I removed all of them and spray painted them, including the tops of the screws. They turned out fine for my kitchen.

we actually did spray paint them originally when we first moved in. but I do not like how the paint has rubbed off in the middle when the door opens and closes…If that makes sense

Can you list your reasons for wanting to replace them? If you want the finish to look renewed, that's a different solution than if you want to change functionality (e.g., add soft-close).

And one more question: In case you do need to replace the hinges, how much is the overlay? Typical overlays are 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2".
