In theory I like open shelves but the reality is that stuff gets dirty, you have to be really precise in your placement of items, especially when they are next to the stove. So, nah.

For my kitchen, we're putting in open shelves by the hood. We love the look, and our kitchen needed some wood tones. But we don't plan to put much on the shelves as we have ample storage elsewhere. Good luck!

Open shelves in the kitchen seem to get a bad rep on this forum. I incorporated three 3 foot shelves in our kitchen renos 2 years ago and if I were to do it again, I'd put even more. We keep our everyday dishes and glasses on them (they are fairly neutral / farmhouse) and they always look great, with no need to fuss about items being put 'just so'.

As for clean up, I usually pass a duster on them once a week (literally takes me 1 minute) and about once a month, I'll give them a soapy wipe down (about 5 minutes). It's a breeze. Mine aren't close to my stove, so maybe that makes a difference. I would love to have more!

Definitely cabinets for me. A few with glass fronts would be ok if there is something nice to display.

I have enough things to OCD about...I could not deal with shelves in my kitchen. Especially near the range...ugh!! They look great in photos, but in reality they would drive me crazy.

I like a combo of cabinets and open shelves. That's what Swiffers are made for!
