Electric Mat Radiant heating

I am renovating a small bathroom-6 feet x 8 feet and was planning on doing electric mat heating on the floor I had hoped to eliminate the baseboard heating in the room and rely only on the electric radiant mat. I've received conflicting information on whether or not the electric mat by itself would be sufficient to heat the bathroom. I live in New York. Has anyone done this,and if so,what has your experience been? Thanks.

I have just installed one in my master bathroom from warmly yours. I haven't moved in yet so can't say from experience, but I don't see how it can't work? It's not instant though, so I would program mine if I were u.

We love our "warmly yours" floors in our guest bath in our lower level. Approx 160 sq ft. It is augmented by a couple of furnace registers in the ceiling but i think it would heat it sufficiently without them.

It should be fine. I have friends with radiant floor heating throughout their house in Massachusetts - it works very well, except that it's not terribly responsive to sharp temperature changes of course. (Theirs is a fluid based system - quite old in fact) We have electric radiant floors in all of our bathrooms in our new house and though we have a floor vent for the forced air in each bath, we could have gone with the electric heat only if we didn't mind the increase in the electricity cost. Since you have electric baseboard (I'm assuming it's not hot water baseboard) you likely won't see an increase in your heating cost, and in fact should see a decrease, because radiant floor heating is more efficient than baseboard heating. I second rawegg's recommendation for the programmable thermostat - you can set it to be nice and toasty when you're actually in the bathroom morning and night, and turn it down at other times, and off in the summer.
