Help venting a dryer?

We recently noticed a faint burning smell from our dryer and decided it was time to clean the exhaust pipe going to the outside. My husband got that all cleared out with a shop vac and I don't know what else, but it got him thinking we should update the venting from the dryer into the wall anyhow.

We prefer not to use the flexible style tubing as the ridges can get lint stuck in them. However, he said there were limited options of sizes for the sheet metal type. To further complicate things, the dummy who built our one story home (no basement) didn't put the laundry room on an outside wall, so our vent is actually a PVC pipe that goes through (or under) our slab, and then comes out of the ground. So instead of most dryers the vent is midway up the wall, ours is directly behind the dryer, close to the ground.

all the solutions we are coming up with involve having the dryer several feet from the wall, which we simply do not have room for.
