I like them, because you don't have to both twist and bend. I have heard that they have smaller capacity, but, we had them for years and now have side by side and I don't notice any significant difference. We traded with my brother's family when they moved to a house that only had room for a stacker.

space saving for potential additional counter area.

I prefer unstacked.

Newer front loading washer/dryers can be stacked and still offer full capacity. If you decide you would prefer side by side then you are still good to go. Not sure of the size space but depending on the layout either choice can be efficient.

Good question! We are mulling the same thing...in our case it would be stacked with a laundry sink or unstated with counters space on top. I'll be interested to see what everyone thinks of your dilemma!

I've done both. Sometimes it was difficult to get everything out of the dryer. I thought it would be great to save the space, but I do a lot of laundry and stacked was not for me. We expanded our laundry room and I am much happier with them side by side. I have nice front loader washer & dryer.

With stacked you do save space - but you lose the countertop space that you could have on top of them if they are side by side. Also side by side allows me two 'stations' on top: dirty washing on top - into washer; clean washing into dryer - clean stuff for ironing on top of dryer. I find it more organized and spacious.

As a person that was just house shopping we didn't choose the house with stacked laundry and no room for our side by side. It would have been a pain to remodel it.

I would never have a front loading washer - they are prone to getting moldy/stinky. Plus, I like to be able to leave the lid up on my top-loader to pre-soak really dirty loads.
