Thanks! By "separate" do you mean not attached to the house at all? I'd like to have it be right up against the house if possible...take out the planter under the windows and...not sure how it's done, but have everything right there, same height as the stoop? Or same height as the ground?

A covered porch on front will darken your interior but it would reduce heat from the sun in the summer. I would
suggest moving the smal lrail fence back to about 12 feet from the house to make a semi- enclosed entry garden/courtyard. It would enhance the "cottage" look of your house, especially if you planted a few low flowering shrubs along the fence. I like shrub roses as they bloom all summer long. You could construct a deck floor on the level with the stoop or install pavers for a solid base for your table and chairs. This would not obstruct the view of those nice big windows and give a welcoming effect to visitors. A colorful umbrella would provide shade while you enjoy your beer and add to the charmof the scene.

A deck would be great in the front of your house. I would build a small deck that would double as a front porch. The deck could come out as far as your garage wall and go over to the edge of your house, this would allow you to put a small table and some chairs in front of your window.
