Any tips for mixing patterned rugs in an open floor plan?

We have an open floor plan that is pretty "cozy" so the living and dining rooms are very close together. We have a rug we like in the living room, but I'm struggling to figure out a complementary rug for the dining room. Any advice for mixing patterns in traditional style rugs? Here's a pic of the rug we have, I was thinking of maybe something that picks up more of the sage green/gold colors, but I'm not sure if that would be too different in such a small space.

do you have a photo of the area to see your furnishings and so on? Nothing wrong with a solid in a color from this rug...

It's a little hard to get a good pic, but here are two different angles. I'm a little worried a solid rug won't be as forgiving at hiding inevitable spills, but maybe that's the best option.

If you are concerned about that under the table then you might do a simple more timeless geometric or similar... Something such as herringbone or ....
