Put a great tree to the right of the stairs and no one will notice the lack of symmetry. You want something reasonably big now, but that won't outgrow its space. If a lot of snow sheds off the roof, you don't want anything that will get damaged. We had a winterberry under our eaves that just got more damage in bad winters than it could recover from in good years. If this is the back of the house, you could extend the deck. With some height, say an umbrella, you wouldn't notice the asymmetry and when it isn't deck weather, you wouldn't be out there, anyway.

A little paint would be great, too. If the siding doesn't need it, it would be expensive for just cosmetics, but you could paint the window frames and the deck.

You could use a lot of landscaping. A bit of grading would help, too.

New stairs and shutters. And a pretty tree where that big empty wall space is.

I've put on my window and door hat: The white trim around the oval glass in the door needs to be the same color as the door itself. From here, it looks plastic. Also, black is a bad color for any door that gets direct sunlight. It attracts the heat and that can damage even a steel or fiberglass door. It's also a decorative door of a style that should be on the front. Replace it with a half or full glass door. Sigrid is right, some serious landscaping could transform this.

Not sure of your budget but here are some fabulous looking split level homes for some inspiration.

If you are replacing the deck, (and I would), make it bigger so it fills in the non-window wall. You then have an awesome front porch and can fill in the empty space with maybe a swing or patio furniture.

The stairs can be made to look prettier and be a feature of the house.

I agree that your house has a lot of potential! I would make a more substantial entrance that has stairs that gradually reach the ground level (ie concrete & natural stone -- no decking). With some grading of the property & well thought-out landscaping, you could make it look great.

acm's rendering with the blue door looks great. That, and landscaping, would make a huge difference without a total overhaul. No shutters please. Good luck with your new home.

I found this picture and this COULD be amazing, when you first walk in, its just the stairs going to the basement, maybe we can restructure the stairs and move the door. thoughts? this also looks incredibly expensive

I would not buy it. Too much work and $$$ needs to be put in, not worth it .

Needs PLANTS, and LOTS of 'em! I like the deck widening thing, put some plants in front to hide the lattice, shrubs between the windows and low growing ground cover or annual flowers where the windows are. A dogwood, pear or small maple to soften the corners up some. Easy, but not cheap.

Looks like you're biting off lots of work. The ladder leaning on the right would have scared me off!

Yamile - not sure if your stairs/deck are covering up something like utility equipment? If so, you'd need to keep that in mind when making improvements to your entry. I agree with others that the unbalanced right side throws the eye off and the stair/decking looks very low grade/quality & lackluster for style. You could probably not spend a fortune going with Lowes/Home Depot railings and composite treads and decking. I'd extend the deck to the right and consider putting in a double door or wider door with all glass or has interest but not dated like the etched one it came with. Look at beautiful ranch below with similar roofline as yours. I love how they broke up all the blank space below windows with shingles & trim and created height for a style of house that has many horizontal lines.

What is your budget for changes to the outside? If you need to replace siding, you're probably looking at $10k at a minimum. There appears to be missing fascia board as well. The stairs don't look to code and you're probably going to have to spend $3-4K to rebuild them. It looks as though you could use a sidewalk from the driveway to the front stairs. The Victorian door glass is definitely not suited to the more contemporary style of the house but can be replaced for about $400 if the door itself is in good shape. It also appears that the lawn needs regrading. The house has potential if you have the budget to make some changes.
