Please help settle debate!

My husband and I have not seen eye to eye on the a/c. In the evenings when it begins to cool off outside, he opens the windows but leaves the a/c on. He claims that if the air temp outside is that of or slightly lower than the a/c setting then it will just even out and the a/c will only make the house as cool as the outdoors. I have stressed to him that this is not how an air conditioner works, hence the name, and that this makes it run more. I awoke last night to the air kicking on over and over and found half the house open (windows). Could a man please explain this to him, as he will not listen to his wife?

Temperature alone does not address the matter of humidity
level. You may have lower humidity levels in the house with the windows closed
    and therefore feel more comfortable.

I would suggest choosing one option or the other; leaving
the widows open with the A/C On is a waste of energy and causes more wear &
    tear of your A/C system.

    Others might think otherwise.

Personally, I think it’s a wasteful, stupid idea to leave the A/C On & open the windows!

I will add this, if you are a couple where one loves
A/C while the other one hates A/C. Then perhaps the one that
hates A/C should sleep in a room with the door closed, window opened while the
rest of the house remained ‘conditioned’.

It makes no sense to have the AC running with the windows open. Even opening the windows with the AC off is not a good idea when the humidity is high. Open windows allow humidity to enter which makes you feel more uncomfortable.

Tell you husband he is not saving money by opening windows.

You can't put 'comfort' in a box. People are comfortable at different temperatures. Some people like fresh air as opposed to indoor stale air.

The indoor stale air is often attributable to the tightness of the home. I don't know if this is part of the argument or not.

Many in this country grew up without air conditioning. ( I was one of them.) When some one has a comfort view of going to sleep with the windows open if you think about it for a second there may be more to this than just comfort in the 'temperature' there are sounds, smells and the freshness of the air, to name a few.

So with that said... On a warm day you can take him outside to the air conditioning condenser (the outside part of your AC system) with the system running the air coming out of the top of it should be warm.

Then point to the two metal tubes protruding from the unit going back into the house. These tubes are the train station for the removal of heat from the home. (Think one big circle continuous loop with two stations, one in the house, one outside the house.)

The refrigerant is the train. When the train is inside the home at the evaporator coil it's empty and has room for passengers (in this case heat). Because heat moves from hot to cool, there is no coaxing needed. The passenger (heat) automatically jumps on the train.

Once the passenger is on the train, the compressor (the big black thing in the bottom of the out door condenser) is what moves the train full of passengers (heat).

Then once the train reaches the condenser it must kick out all of the passengers (heat). (It does this with the use of the condenser fan.) Remember heat goes from hot to cool, not hot to hot. (This is why the air coming out the top of the condenser should be warm.)

Comfort however it is viewed... like a blanket, like a pacifier a lot of times it's in the head of the individual even after you tell them it may not make much difference.

It takes 21 days to break a habit. The problem is you have to WANT to break the habit first.

    Good luck.

My husband was a building contractor on Long Island....What will happen if you open your windows and let your A/C run is that your unit will ice up....not sure how it happens but we had a client who did it to his on multiple occasions.

False. An air conditioner evaporator coil is designed to run at around 50 degrees Fahrenheit under normal conditions of 70 degree indoor ambient air temp. / 75 degree temp and the coil temp would run at around 55 degrees. (notice higher ambient temp and the coil temp goes up not down.)

    FYI, freezing is 32 degrees.

The split temp difference can change depending on application and location, but it would still be above freezing for air conditioning application.

Air Conditioning is considered a 'HIGH TEMP' application. If the system is freezing up it is typically due to a problem with the equipment. 'No one is going to run the AC (with the windows open) and 50 degrees outside.'

Even then a thermostat for cooling likely doesn't have a setting that low. The AC would merely cycle off under such scenario.

If everyone left their doors open when weather was hot,it would go a long way in overcoming global warming. If we cooled off the intire southwestern united states early on,think of the energy savings by not having to run air conditioning the remainder of summer. A very good government subsidized program.

Go out unto the world and spread concrete for buildings, sidewalks, roads. Throw in some black tar pavement because it's cheaper for good measure.

I will sprinkle my sunshine on it. The population of the earth will grow....

Then in your befuddlement you will wonder why the earth is getting warmer.

oops sorry I was having a 'horse and buggy' moment.

Thought I heard it all, nope this takes the cake. lololol

What a waste of energy. You know, you could hook up a treadmill to a generator and he could run on it to make up the energy he wastes. Maybe he will close the windows? If its fresh air he wants then install an ERV or HRV. At least that way you wont let allergens in the house as those systems typically have a filter.

Ok so that was the bashing part, heres the explanation since he doesnt seem to understand. AC units take heat from the inside and dump it outside. If the outside is the same temp as the inside, your running various motors and pumps and achieving nothing, other than wasting energy which you pay for in your electric bill. Also remember that all things break in time, so the more he runs the AC the sooner it will break.

I agree with all the above reasons to keep windows and doors shut while running the AC. But I have a feeling you won't win this debate with hubby.

I would be annoyed too, but sometimes say, "Yes dear, you're always right."

I can't think of a time when I've fully convinced my DH I'm right. Even after research, he says it's "fake news". LOL
