Lounge layout dilemma

i am trying to decide on the best lounge layout. It is an open plan space next to the dining. There are no walls to back the furniture onto. I have experimented with L-shape (to try and create an open flow to the dining area - see photo).

The other option is to have my 3 seater and 2 seater facing each other. My worry with this set out is it feels like it blocks the flow of conversation between the dining and living

I want to upgrade my couch and need help! Do I go for a modular corner suite or a 3 seater with 2 single chairs (my thinking here is that with the space between the chairs it feels more open).

I really like the facing layout better than the L-shaped layout. It's more conducive the conversation. Talking across the diagonal is awkward.

I also like that more rug is showing. The space to either side of the couches now looks like part of the grouping instead of hallways to bypass the grouping. That's definitely not the case with the L-shaped set up. It looks like the couches crowded onto the rug to allow for a hallway behind the grouping.

When you upgrade your furniture, consider separate seating since it provides a more open floor plan. It allows more options to mix couch, chairs and ottomans with fabric selection and placement. I find that a sectional is great for watching tv, but it doesn’t really add more seating. It would be limiting because of the way the pieces are configured which typically results in only one layout.

Hi Loretta. You are thinking in the right direction. I agree with what optimal viewz says. In addition, consider that guests like their own chairs.

Could you please post (and then I can help you with the arrangement)

1) Post more photos of the space. I'd like to see a view taken from the dining room and one taken from the slider door.

2) Is there a tv that needs to be considered?

3) What is the main function of the living space? For you and your family? Family and guests? Or not really used much?

Thank you so much for your replies. Sorry for the delay in responding. Since your reply I have moved the couch again so here are some updated photos.

I love the idea of the separate pieces. Because the space feels narrow I am unsure how to place them other than the predictable 3 seat sofa facing 2 armchairs.

also we do not need to worry about a TV in this lounge it is more for adults/guests or quiet time for the kids (5 and 3 yrs). It is used daily.

Anyway your feedback is gratefully appreciated.

Hi. There is too much furniture there for the space and it is blocking the stairs and front hall.

I recommend moving out the love seat. Place the sofa facing the pool. Place 2 chairs on either side of the sofa. The chairs will face each other. Sort of like the arrangement above.

Foot traffic will walk behind the sofa.

The art over the console is too high. Please move it down to no more than 10" above the console.

On the bookshelves, group a few photos together on a lower shelf. On the other shelves, add books or an interesting collection.
