beautiful! What's the lighting like? Is the wood ceiling in good shape?

most on here will vote for it to stay as is and work on the walls and surrounding decor. What are your plans for the flooring?

I would redo the blue wall color and paint the baseboards white. Get new flooring and lighting. Take some good pics during the day so we can see the difference.

What color would you paint the room? We are going to replace the carpet at some point and I would like to put in can lights at some point. Currently there is 90s chandeliers that I painted black.

do you like your furniture?

if you want to paint in order to have a 'bright and breezy' feeling, your furniture won't help your cause, you might as well leave it wood. if however you are committed to airing the whole room out, new furniture and painted wood ceiling would be awesome.

i'm a 'paint all the wood' person, and it took me a long time to come to terms with my wood ceiling but its much higher than yours is, which makes a difference.

It's not the wood that is suckingthe light out of the room. It is all of the other heavy brown furniture. You need to fix that problem first. Second, you need to talk to an electrician about adding lighting. Painting any light fixture black is exactly the wrong way to go. You need lightness, shine, and maybe sparkle. Brass would be perfect here.

Like others have said, you need better lighting and lighter furniture. While I like blue paint, in this room it doesn't seem to work

Don't consider staining the wood ceiling or beams, (don't even consider actual paint) until you have a full fleshed out master plan for the room. The blue walls would have to go and the shiny brown leather furniture will really look out of place once the ceiling and beams change color. See images below. Also, the lighting really needs to be addressed because it's inadequate. Those hot spots are distracting.
