You will need to take a cabinet drawer or door with a countertop sample to your tile place and compare these items. Your cabinets look kind of light beige, countertops have warm colors but also a good bit of black, and paint looks kind of latte in color, so I would want more light under the cabinets. But getting the right "light" is the trick. Everything except the countertop is smooth and relatively "quiet", so you can so some texture on the backsplash. the cabinets and colors look traditional to me. Is that the basic style? If so, perhaps a crackle subway tile in a tone that works with the cabinets but is not pure white would add that bit of texture without too much attention Of course, under cabinet lighting is a must.

this could work with your cabinets and it would work with your countertops. I also like the way it isn't perfect so would give some interest. Grouting is key to making this look right. Match the grout to the medium to light color in the tiles.

Beth, you attached a photo of some drawer pulls, what color are they, on my end it looks like there is some brown in them. I like that, would tie into my island lights

The wall colour seems heavy. Under-cabinet lighting is essential. Keep the backsplash pale, and not too shiny.

Wall color isnt too bad especially since very little of it will show. I have a large pic for the one wall

do the cabinet pulls have to match my kitchen faucet. it is brushed nickel, or should I go with more bronze because of the lights over my island

They don't 'have' to. but normally they match the faucet. Why don't you get a few of each and see what you like best?

I would do stainless or oil rubbed bronze pulls, not chrome. Fingerprints drive me crazy. I also do all the same pulls instead of knobs and pulls. Amazon has really good pulls that are packages so they're not super expensive

thanks Flo, I like the tile you picked, I think this is similar, or does it look too rustic. Should I go with the same size subway tile or a travertine. I know the travertine doesn't have have a gloss to it

here is another one, I just don't want anything to busy with my granite.

I think I will have to bring home both colors of pulls so I can decide. I think the bronze would be a nice contrast to my island lights and would pop on the light cabinets, but all my appliances and faucet are the brushed nickel.

I would not do travertine for backsplash. That second one has way too much action to play nicely with your countertop. Keep checking for that tile. Shipments have been backed up at some ports recently. I will look around for you.

Found similar ones at Overstock and Home Depot but wanted to point out if you want narrow grout lines this is not tile for you. If you want a but oh a rustic look, they are great. Order samples from current runs in any case because color variation is high. Just a few tips that apply to any tiles some more than others.

I was just looking on home depot, would a mini pencil tile work, not sure if i want a big grout line

It is the worst!! I personally would stay away from the subway tile. Since it's not white it dates it back to the days of cream colored appliances in my opinion. I love the stone. You can buy sample panels almost anywhere that are returnable and will help a ton at figuring out what you want

i second the subway tile backsplash. Since your counters are kinda busy like mine...it really balances things out.

Now you have a plan. Yes, either bring samples home to test in your existing light, or take a cabinet door to the tile places. Yes, you will look like a bag lady! But it is necessary to get everything working together. Probably 10 elements in a kitchen that need to play nice together! Cabinets, backsplash, countertop, hardware, pendants, sinks, appliances, vent hoods, paint and other lighting for sure! The pencil look is out and there is more grout lines and business than ever with it. Beth posted some "stacked" longer glass tiles that might be your preference, so look at those options as well. Installation of glass is a whole different beast, so you have to factor that labor cost (with right experienced glass installer) into your total costs. I call it "total cost of ownership". Materials, grout, other materials, and the labor, clean-up, touch-ups all come into play. Good luck. Keep us posted. TIP: if you want very narrow grout lines, look for tile that has what we call "rectified" edges. That means the edges are cut very straight, so very little grout is needed between the tiles. That might be the look you want. Goes for flooring as well.
