Who cares if it's "in style"? Styles change, and the only people who will ever see it (regularly) are you and the family. Do what you want. I wouldn't use it around water, but otherwise, do whatever you like.

I have light gray cabinets with a primarily white quartz countertops. My island is darker gray with a butcher block top. I'm very happy with it. If you are interest in pictures go to my Ideabooks and look at the folder called "Final Conesus Photos." As an FYI, the photos were taken before the butcher block had been seasoned with any oil. Now that it is seasoned it is a little darker and richer looking.
