Terrace it and plant shrubs ?

I should clarify. The reason I need to transport the mower down the hill is because there is a lawn at the bottom of the hill that I need to mow.

Make a path with switchbacks and fill in the balance of the slope with plants or a hardy ground cover.

Any idea what your neighbors do? Any possibility of getting a second mower (maybe one of the old school reel mower since your bottom yard looks pretty level) and storing it in a small shed on the lower yard?

Have you weighed the cost of building a ramp, that you don't want, against the cost of having a second lawn mower and a small shed on the lower lawn? Otherwise a cut-and -fill grass covered ramp might be your answer. The question is how long. You may be able to create a flat space in the middle so it does not feel so steep.

Thanks for all the ideas! My neighbors on the one side are blessed with a wonderful gradual hill on the far side of their property and my other neighbor does a super sketchy dance with their mower down their hill. Our goal here is safety; unfortunately a ramp going up the hill is far too steep to consider it safe in the event of a slip. Funny thing about the reel mowers; I mowed our entire lawn with one for a year....never again. The picture makes it look nice and level but there are strange canyons and holes down there which made it ridiculous.


Your ideas got me thinking differently about this problem and I was torn between a new mower/shed (which would save some time if my wife and I mow at the same time) and finding an alternative to a ramp. I'm curious now about a puppet system

Do you use the lawn at the bottom of the hill? If not, replace the lawn with ground-cover. You could also consult a landscape architect to look over the whole property and suggest better solutions.

My hill is almost as steep as yours. When I used to mow my backyard, I wore golf shoes with spikes to give me traction so I didn’t slide down the hill. now i have someone mow it for me.
