Porter, thanks so much for your quick comments! The rest of my post was cut off, but I am looking to replace the sconces and the chandelier, probably with different finishes. Yes, they are way too high! I have been looking for something where the light box would be in the same place, but the profile more down than up. We have plaster over our drywall, so repairing holes is a bigger than average deal. LOL on your plant comment - I used to have a tall fiscus there and took it out. The table actually has an extra leaf in it right now that's usually out, but I would like to keep the chairs in the room because we use them often.
Open to painting buffet and perhaps changing the base of it (very handy husband), and maybe even changing the finish on the quartersawn oak table. Furniture and rug stay - I just don't want to spend a lot on new furnishings at this stage of our lives.

The chandelier does look a little too tiny for the size of the room and the massive table.

Remove the runner from the table and add a centerpiece that has more weight.

Love the crystal with your decor especially with the dark metal for contrast. Plus, less formal, don't you think?

You might try replacing the chandelier first and then see how the sconces work. It's really the chandelier that isn't right.

I don't mind the sconces, but I agree that you need a chandelier with more presence. Maybe a simple drum?

I like the sideboard with the different more round wood mirror above. I think the table is a good quality wood would hate to see it painted if it's quality wood. I wonder if you would paint the china cabinet to tie in to the room as it's formal (as are the belongings in it as it appears) and the chairs are not. I think then it would tie much better as it shows formal and the rest not as much. Maybe in to a graphite tone and not pitch black...

I think the best question would be what would you like the room to look like? Formal or transitional or, "Pottery Barn" as much as I hate to say that.

I would eliminate the sconces if they can't be lowered and changed.

I'm not sure why I'm seeing a wine barrel chandelier or a large lantern light. Yet, that's what I see.

This would tie in with your foyer light a lot better as well vs. brushed silver or similar.

I think it can all be worked with. The piece I was speaking of that to me is very formal compared to the chairs, sideboard and so on is the china hutch. I think is should be painted darker to tie in to the rest. personal decisions and so on... you may want to add a piece to your table top and remove the short runner as well.

even if basic for summer, just a bit larger in scale and a runner than extends over the edge of the table if you want to use a runner.

I think Porter is right about the black light fixtures. Here is a gold bowl for your table. Fill it with wooden balls or whatever you like.

Porter, I hadn't thought about painting the glass cabinet! That's an idea I'll have to noodle, graphite might work. I am drawn to the first chandy you posted as I am trying to bring down the "formal factor" in the room, but it may be too large. The room is roughly 12' by 15', the table (without this extra leaf) is 4' by 7'. Ceilings are 11 feet.
Acm, the lamp originally came with a large, appropriately sized drum, but when it went up in the room that's all you saw, so I took it off. Our last house had large windows opposite the entrance but I think having a wall there called for more of a see-through light?
Beverly, good ideas on the sconces, thank you. The chandys are more formal than I'd like, but I realize it will be hard to find sconces that go with something less formal.
As pretty as the rug is, I know changing it would make a big difference toward toning down the formality.
The glass cabinet is filled with family memories that I just can't bear to part with.
Please keep ideas coming for the fixtures! The foyer light is another mistake that I need to replace.

Yes, the table decor is much too small! I threw something on there for a family gathering, soon to come off! The runner does extend over the ends of the table with the leaf out. I like some of the table top ideas, thanks!

Don't paint the glass cabinet. Place black elements on the top.

A terrarium on the table might make a nice centerpiece.

The glass cabinet is too formal in the room.... The lantern is Gabby Arnold Lantern is large 32" if you view it and would look great in the room.

The lantern is a very transitional piece... goes in any room depending on the metal.

The Darlana is a bit more vertical while the one above is slightly more rectangle being larger horizontally hence my choice for offering as a suggestion.

I'd relocate the glass front piece or I'd paint it if it's not a piece that is near and dear to you then I would not want you to paint it naturally. Given the chairs, the mirror over the sideboard and so on, it's the only piece other than the lighting that interferes in the room.

You would have a transitional room, not a traditional room if you made those changes....

Ok I have used View in my Room to add the lighting suggested by PorterEdun and a simpler version of that suggested by BeverlyFLADeziner to my room. I couldn't figure out how to use the scale feature, so would appreciate help there. I am corned about two things (1) generally, I tend to think black fixtures look kind of cheesy, less substantial, than others. Is it just me? (2) if I were to go with the more transitional option, I'm having trouble finding sconces and a new foyer light that could work so looking for suggestions. I do kind of like it, tho, it is different.

I won't be painting the China cabinet, it's a quality solid wood piece from EA and my husband is totally opposed. I will try putting black accents on it, and consider if I have somewhere else to move it.

Both look nice.... did you try the black lantern in the area? If you leave the sconces the silver tone looks nice. If you don't they both look nice both Bev's and the lantern. Just personal taste is all.... I chose the one I did as there are some elements in the room that are not formal and some that are... so the transitional Lantern which goes with most decor.

I wish it was a bit lower so I could see what it looks like!! I have to run out, but if you try the black I'd love to see it and even if the chain is in mid air... no worries...
