Newbie needs help w/ id

Hi,

Working on creating large shade gardens and bam! I have a new obsession... Hostas.

My neighbor has a nursery and brings me home pots that lose their labels,

unfortunately my OCD wants to know the variety so I can label them. Help would be greatly appreciated!

I think # 5 are both the same just different light conditions.

    top right reminds me of a young guacamole ... fragrant white flowers will confirm that ...


    top down pix oddly... make things hard.. try to avoid such in the future ... and a known scale wouldnt hurt .. but no need to redo these ...


    again ... the immaturity might make 'for sure' ID hard ... but there is always next year ...

      #2 looks to have a lot of collapsed tissue, indicative of a major case of HVX. Toss it. In the garbage, not the compost. A better/larger picture of that one alone will allow confirmation. And if you're taking more pictures take another one of #4 that has the whole plant in the shade, it'll make ID easier.

      #1 could be 'Stained Glass'

      I'm pretty sure the fastest way to cure a girl's addiction is to tell her she may have a disease! LOL Shade plants are a whole new world to me. I have seen HVX mentioned in articles but I have no clue how to identify it. While I now understand turgidty versus flacid from reading posts on this forum , can you explain 'collapsed tissue' to me? I am a sponge ready to absorb information. All help is appreciated! Here are more pics of hosta #2. Is there a place where you can bring a hosta in question to identify HVX?

      Number 1 and/or two may be Stained Glass. Lack of light can make it more green. I see no HVX.

      Now that I've had a chance to take a closer look at the image and blow it up, what I initially thought might have been collapsed tissue is probably nothing more than water drops. Are you sure it's all the same plant in the last 3 pictures, #3 looks to be different from the first 2.

      Look on the Hosta Library for same examples of the different manifestations of HVX. You would like to think that a good specialty nursery in your area might be able to confirm whether a given specimen is HVX infected, but I wouldn't count on it. You're best off to look at as much information on the subject as you can find.
