Don't know what slugs eat, but yuck! I have good news on getting rid of them, but I'm not sure what this will do to the worms. Ammonium sulfate is a common and very inexpensive fertilizer. It looks like rock salt and has the exact same effect as salt on slugs and snails. Apply ammonium sulfate fertilizer where the slugs live and they will disappear literally overnight.

You can also fill a spray bottle with liquid ammonia and water, and spray them at night, killing them on contact instantly. Not sure what the proper proportions are - I usually just go with roughly 1 part ammonia and 4 parts water, which seems to work, but I've also read 1 part ammonia, plus 9 or 10 parts water.

They don't seem to cause damage to my lawn, but they do a lot of damage on my hostas. The only reason I often spray them on the lawn is that sometimes when I'm out spraying them on my hostas, the slugs on the lawn end up on my shoes or pant legs ... and then in my house ... which I really hate. So if I see them on the lawn, I zap them.

Also, I've never heard mention that the presence of slugs means a healthy lawn. I doubt it, though it might mean that your lawn is well watered given that they thrive in moist conditions.

Slugs have an amazing sense of smell and they are insanely attracted to beer.

Set out a few dishes of beer low enough to the ground that they can crawl inside. They will craw right in and then they will die smiling.

You will need to set the beer traps out each night. You'll likely need to refill them every night, too. but it's cheaper, easier and safer than chemical controls.
