Help with Living Room Design Please!!

last modified: 8 years ago

Just starting to decorate this living and thought I would try to make these chairs work.

Would love to hear your opinion on what sort of chairs would look best in this living room please?

It will be used for entertaining and watching TV in the cabinet to the right of the fireplace. Will not be used everyday but when there are visitors including children. So need it to be comfortable.

The tables are just for visual, will not be using!!

Maybe so Lynartist. Maybe if they have a matching velvet I will be able to see what it looks like. But I have a feeling I will be driving that woman mad because she said we can look at tapes and different options for the leather chairs so she will be surprised if I mention for the SR and possibly the LR! I think this could be an all day session! Lol

I think finding a matching velvet for the VY print would look very pretty. I would do two in just the print and two with the velvet bands on the sides. I'm not a fan of all 4 pillows being exactly the same and adding the velvet to one pair would give you some variety while not being completely different.

The caramel is my favorite of the two velvets for the LR, but I didn't want to say so until I knew which you liked better. It has a richness and lustre to it that the darker one lacks (at least in photos.)

Yes that could work Threepets!! I didn’t want to have two completely different sets of pillows but two being different using the same fabric could work!

Oh dear size! Which size above do y’all like better? It may be difficult to sit with a larger pillow. It may have to come off to sit comfortably. The bottom one I sized at about 9” as you suggested Flo. I thought maybe quite wide at 22”. It is about 25” between arms.

Think the leather chairs may also look best at 9 or 10” x 18 to 20”The sofa maybe 13 or 14” x 22

I hesitate to make any more posts about the pillow dilemma as I think it has been beat to death. But I can't resist saying that I agree with Seajay and Threepets. The paintings, prints and objects d'art (along with the brown chairs) help carry the brown velvet (either one) and add richness and depth to your tonal room. The VY for the SR is perfect as well. I like the idea of the two rooms having a bit of their own personality with different colors. Choose one fabric for either the LR or SR and pull the trigger WM before you pass out from confusion and exhaustion.

Thank you Lisalane, guess you could tell I am confused as well as exhausted. :))) But you saying to choose one fabric for SR or LR, thought you initially liked the idea of two fabrics in SR?

Not necessarily WM. I was just wondering what you were thinking in that regard.

I am not meaning to sound ugly, but I believe that woman is getting paid to help the customer. You take all the time you need and get what you like. No regrets, wmsimons.

It doesn’t sound ugly at all. Thank you Tagan. :).

If you are feeling a bit frazzled just take some time and think about it WM. As Tagan said that’s what the salesperson is there for. They may be able to give you a bit of insight on color and size too as they do this often. Don’t feel pressured; take all the time you need. Ask to see pillows in the sizes you want and the styles. It may put your uncertainty at ease.

Thank you Lynartist. Think she has already shown me all the standard sizes but can of course order any size I want. Hopefully she will have the time to give me.

Wms, I see beautiful pillows in your future.... Just click your heels 3 times and they will appear.

I’m wondering if the VY fabric loses it appeal when it is cut down for a panel in a pillow with the velvet side panels. Hard to tell from mockups and just a thought. And I’m not a fan of the baby blue velvet - just seems a bit too bedroomish (word?) or something. But have fun at CC WM! As always, I admire your energy in doing due diligence for every design decision. That’s why your house is so lovely!
Sigh... I agree lisalane. As these pillows will be quite small I don’t think they will have that much of a pattern anyway and therefore not so much impact as viewed from the other room. I wouldn’t worry about it .

There is enough variation in the VY pattern, that you can select a portion that will show up beautifully and give just that touch of interest without punching you in the face. The pattern size is not large. And the pattern changes sizes for a nice variation. No worries.

P.S. The color is also not a baby blue. It might come across that way on monitor, but it is a beautiful blue/green with the velvet part being the beauty of velvet with looking different as velvet does from different angles.

Well went to CC today and will go back Friday! I ordered a yard of the emblem fabric because without seeing how it repeats, very difficult to know how it would be best to work with it if at all. So hopefully I can use this yard I bought!

Did discuss having solid velvet on the outside of a VY pattern and the caramel she was against it. Found a VY velvet same color shown below. She recommended maybe adding a welt. Or having two solid velvet pillows and two of the floral. All floral was her choice though. The below fabric is a different color for the welt but seemed to go well.

What do y’all think about having a welt versus a simple seam?

Will show a couple of options for the emblem, really not sure about this.

By the way, bottom photo is a pillow from sofa.

I'm not sure from your post above what she was against - the velvet on the sides of the print pillow, the caramel on the sofa, or both?

Is she suggesting a contrasing welt of the velvet around the printed pillow? I guess that depends on how formal you want them to look. A welt always makes a pillow look more formal to me, and I thought you wanted a more casual, unfussy look for the SR.

I find welts on casual pillows uncomfortable. I would do simple seams.

She was against doing both that way. I would say her motive is because it’s more hassle but if I went for the emblem it would already be a hassle. But not sure why she feels this way. I do think she may not have a lot of experience, she had good ideas but was asking another lady things and she told me 5his lady has a lot of experience.

I really am clueless when it comes to this sort of thing so very interesting that the welts make the pillows more formal Threepets. You are right, that is not what I want.

Thank you Flo, just saw your post. I don’t know why she was recommending a welt. :/

No offense to this person, but she simply doesn’t have the experience and is a simple salesperson. So, use your own common sense. It has guided you well. ;)

OK that is enough. Think this lovely lady felizlady has made a comment before.

This link is the continuation and hopefully as other threads in this section that has over 50,000 posts it won’t bother people like felizlady.

In all fairness no longer think this thread belongs here.

Love the direction your headed in that you’ve got the tension created between light/dark, masculine/feminine, rustic/soft ...I think thats an element of design a lot of people miss & its what makes designer spaces have that WOW feeling & look.

Your space is rather large! You’ve done a great job of filling some areas with the cabinets & feminine classic sofas in a neutral upholstery. Also love the rug tones but think it would look more appealing if it were larger so you could group the items closer together & all on the rug (giving it an intimate feeling).

If this were a clients space this would be my plan:
*Increase rug size to allow all furniture feet to be on (keeping same rug or at least same tones & soft faded oshuk)

*Move sofas to ends of rug so they’re facing one another- Add side tables & lamps or similar for ambient lighting

*Leather armchairs facing fireplace straight on with rectangular wood table between (Lamp & book vignettes)

*Large square ottoman coffee table in slipcovered linen or something similar (Large trays for book, drink, etc placement)

*Pull everything in toward each-other so it feels more intimate & conversation can flow (leave about 17” btwn coffee table & furniture & 32” btwn furniture groupings for walkways)

Hi Jessica, it has been almost a year since there was really any activity on this thread! It was a bit of a marathon!! The furniture ended up as you described but without the end tables next to the sofas, thanks to some very talented and not to mention fun people here on the site. :) That rug was a real dilemma in itself! I agree it would have been so much better and easier if it was larger. It is 10ft 3” x 14ft. I just measured again because I forgot what size it was!

I would at least delete that first photo if I could not to waste people’s time. But in any case thank you for the comments.

I would opt for a splash of color! Wether that be a new accent chair or some colorful pillows and some art! Maybe a fun patterned rug if you don' already have one!

I am a big fan of sectional sofas and I think one would fit perfectly in that room.

This room has been finished for a while. If I could delete that horrible first photo I would. :)

Thanks for the input though Tayler and Derek.

Derek I personally have never been a fan of sectionals but do think you are right here . It would have definitely worked in this room! But I did buy the sofas before I even started the dilemma so that never even came up as an idea but would have been a good easy solution if I hadn’t.

Great tips for the plant. I will try to mist it too! I want to keep it's happy as possible. And Bluenan, I love those pillows. I still don't have a chair in the foyer. I kept the xbench there for now. I really like your first and third option for there. Thank you!

I would say that when you see a picture, look at the commentator who posted the picture. If it comes from Rhonda then it is real. If it comes from groveraxle then it is her photoshop's work.I personally would try not to accentuate it with trim, if it bugs you already. I would do as babophz suggested and if possible... wallpaper up to the highest part of the angle.

Thanks, you two. I ordered a swatch of the wallpaper. Let's hope it has enough of the mustard type yellow in it to go with the pinks.

I thought the rug related to the drapes as well as living room rug.

Well that may be difficult to match. Don’t think VY has a solid in that color. It is such an unusual color .

I think if you ask 10 people, you'd get a different idea of the definition of what color "sand" is.

The more earthy toned rugs bring out the more earthy tones of the drapes/ones with more yellow bring out the chartreuse tones poker online

I liked the lanterns off-center with the low candles in the center, did you move them? I know that fig will grow, give it time. I was thinking a more weighty pot would help, it's a bit top heavy. If you add other plants there will come a time when that corner will be overtaken with green, for me, one is enough. I find my eye goes right to the orange piece on the mantle, I would put it somewhere else.
