If you can't bring yourself to try to fix it for now, then you better remove it. That seems to be what you want to do. Admit it and move on. Life is too short to gaze at tile you hate. But, consider you are throwing out probably what a couple thousand dollars? I sure would try a fix first. But that's just me. We can only do so much from this side of the monitor! Good luck.

I agree that it's far less busy without the grout. The colors seem to blend rather than being so separate. My sister did a VERY busy backsplash with her new counter top. I went very simple. She doesn't love mine and I don't love hers! You picked it for a reason. Do you have an extra sheet you can try with a sample of a darker grout?

Yes I have an extra sheet and I just picked up darker grout to see if it blends. I'll post a pic later or tomorrow of the sample piece with the new color grout

That should seal the deal for you;)! You may find that it is acceptable for awhile. Maybe down the road you may want to change it and you can feel that you got your money 's worth out of it by then!

Even looking at the tiles without the grout looks better. It's definitely the light grout. Interested to see that sample you try with darker grout. Then I think it will be much better, really it's not that bad, I've seen a hell of a lot worse

use a dremmel w/a small circular saw blade. be careful not to hit the tile. you would be paying someone hourly to do this. do it yourself over a period of time. (how big are the tiles, or rather, how many grout lines are there?)

Tiles are small and have a lot of grout lines

horrible job to do! I would price it high just so I wouldn't have to do it! honestly, get the dremmel and do about 30 mins a day until it's done. If it's small glass tiles, you have to be very very careful

or, rip out the tile and redo the whole thing

Beth isn't there a way to stain the grout? Taking this grout out would be crazy hard. I doubt it can be done.

yes, (they didn't ask about that! lol) I believe there is a grout stain. however, if it's dark and they want to go light, I don't know if it will work. Nor will it work if they used an epoxy or acrylic type grout.

Janene,,you want to remove all of this grout? why? what do you hope to accomplish? There is nothing wrong w/this grout, and changing it won't do anything to remedy whatever it is don't like. Going darker would be mistake. leave it alone or change the splash completely.

Personally I think the countertop and backsplash look fine together. what I don't like are the cherry colored cabinets. If these cabinets were a soft Ivory or that gray tone that's in the glass, it would be gorgeous.

I think I advised you earlier to paint out that white window trim a soft cream color to match the countertop and remove the valance. Can you do that?

Beth, I thought staining the grout (if possible) with a color that matched the darkest tile in the backsplash would help reduce the "outline" affect and dark colors "recede" so might work to make the backsplash less busy. But I defer to you on this topic. I do know with multi-colored backsplashes darker grout usually work better than light and this turned out much lighter.

Get a few quotes, it will be a lot cheaper than renewing the backsplash. Do the sample though and let us have a lot

My vote is take it out. Go with a larger tile and 1 color with maybe a detail. But it's a lot going on.

Beth, why don't you like the cherry colored cabinets? Does the granite I choose go good with the cabinets? Please send me fine ideas of bs splashes that will compliment cabinets and granite. I'm not really a fan of subway tiles

Janene, you shouldn't need to remove the grout. There are companies that will come out and re-stain it to a darker color for you. Like Beth said, unless it's epoxy or acrylic, it can be done. Did you try the sample with the darker grout?

Janene, I like them, but with what you've chosen, it seems to be more pronounced. you have a great countertop, great tile and these dark, elegant cabinets. It's like each one is screaming, "look at me look at me". if you eliminate one by making it 'less showy', then things calm down a bit.

Personally, I don't think doing a darker grout will lessen the impact of the two shades of glass. I think it will only enhance what's there. make it stand out more. my opinion. If you want to try it on a small section, be my guest. Do you know what kind of grout was used? if it's regular grout, maybe try an enhanced sealer. that will darken it.

can you try living with this for awhile and see if it grows on you? It really isn't as bad as you're making it out to be. It's better than tons of other kitchens that we see on here.

Beth, can you send me some backsplash ideas that you think would go well with what I have. I went to a tile store yesterday and was even more confused. I'm not a fan of the subway tiles as they remind me of bathroom tiles and they are so boring. Thanks for all your help. it's White Thassos Marble w/mirror dots.

3rd is from Fireclay tile (look on their site. lots of different shapes you might like). this one is called the wave, comes in different colors. and sizes.

5th is an antique white avail from home depot, online.

Janene...you seem to be consistently drawn to detailed mosaics...I like them too...but to make that work here they need to be of a very similar material to the countertops...not contrasting...so the detail is the star ...not the material...you see this often with white marble counters...with smaller herringbone mosaic pattern... in a matching stone ....on the backsplash...

janene, did you go over to the fireclay link I posted? they have 60 colors. you could do your wave tile in a variety of shades to match the granite. call Lindsey and she will send you samples. you keep asking everyone to post pictures. there are at least 20 different mosaics posted on here. time for you to grab some samples and look at them at home. Otherwise, you're just going to get overwhelmed w/all the choices and opinions.

Those small mosaics are going to be too busy. You already have busy on your counter. Stay away from that in the backsplash. You say subway tile is boring, but have a somewhat busy granite that needs a somewhat calm backspash. :-)

If I send you a pic of my dining and living room would u be able to insert a pic of s grey couch that I send u in replace of what I have? you could get grey tones w/brown/tan undertones. that shouldn't be an issue. grays are usually a cool blue/green tones or the warmer greige/tan/brown undertones. If you go the gray route, you would want to do the warmer tones because of your cabinets and your granite. On the countertop, pick up off of the tan/ivory shades rather than the cooler blue-green grays. make sense?

The colors are a match but the busy granite fights with the busy backsplash. Better to fix it now and be done with it.

maybe a tad too creamy. hard to tell w/the photo. If you're going that route (plain neutral) then pick the shade of white/ivory (or that greige tan/gray color) that's in the granite. Don't add another shade to the mix.

Try a "bone" color that might work with the lighter shades in your granite.

This is a dove gray-left and Antique White (home depot) on the right. these tones would work

that doesn't matter. they're all neutrals. either will be fine. just pick something that goes w/the granite and the cabinets.

anything that allows a contrast. you still need to paint your window trim an ivory shade and lose that bright white. It's so distracting, that bright white. I don't mind the white elsewhere in your room, it's just around that window, next to the granite/cabinets.

try Ivory or Acadia on that window.

as for your splash, take a rest for awhile. I honestly don't think your current backsplash is bad. Can you live with it for awhile and take your time while you look for something else? seems like you're rushing trying to find a replacement.

I feel like there aren't many options with the backsplash for my granite. I'm kind of rushing because I have so many other things to do in this house. I'm also repainting it and have to pick window treatments.

Decide in haste, repent (as you are) at leisure. There are plenty of choices out there so just look for some "bone" colors. Bone is lighter than cream but more tinted than whites. I think bone would work well. Frankly, I would hold off on this because it just isn't high enough priority to re-spend money on it. Opps I just read Beth's input, which is basically the same. Shocker! hahaha! Just enjoy a holiday and give it a rest!
