Grass browning out

last modified: 9 years ago

So not sure what is happening. Usually have nice grass weed free. I took over this lawn when it was bare and covered in weeds. This is my third year and it has come along way. I did the same as last year. In in northeast BTW in PA. I applied beginning of season Scott's fertalized. End of April Scott's weed and feed, then end of May grub control. Now all of sudden a month later it's browsing up bad in spots and practically dieing. We have had a lot of rain but watered in spots when we had some dry days. Do you think it's still short on water? I also have scotts greenmax should I lay an app of that to see if that spikes it up or do I not want to apply on a struggling lawn. Please anyhelp before it gets worse is appreciated. Tall fescue and rye mix.

There have been many threads about this type of condition this year.

Mostly from those of us in the NE U.S. I'm in NJ.

Others will weigh in, but I'm of the mind set that with all the rain we have had, it's a fungal issue. I'm not promising you that's your issue, just my opinion as to a possible reason.

I'd suggest looking at some of the other recent threads on this; lots of info there.

Joe, I was must reading your post seems real close to what is happening. Do you think I should lay a generic fungal disease spray like most are doing? Is there any harm to using it if you don't need it? Say it is fungal is the s one time application and then I'll be OK or more often? Will that brown grass green back up?

I can't answer you specifically; others here have more informed opinions. I personally did put down a fungus control last week and am waiting to see what happens.

One thing I've learned in the last 3-4 years of being involved in upkeep of my own lawn: it's a constant learning process, and you have to adjust certain practices to fit your own situation.

OK thanks Joe. Will see if anyone else more knowledge on it too. I think I will havw to lay something.

Did you blanket spray any herbicide recently?

I haven't done anything since the grub treatment in beginning of June or before that a weed and feed in may.

Does putting a fungus preventer on a lawn do any damage if not needed?

A good percentage of your lawn is now creeping bentgrass. Very shallow rooted. During summer, it looks dreadful without copious amounts of irrigation. Really has no place in a residential lawn IMHO. Now would be a good time to spot spray Tenacity. Multiple applications would be necessary and overseeding of desirable turfgrass needs to be done in fall--also with Tenacity applications.

So basically you think like my entire lawn is a weed? The tenacity will kill it all off won't it? Should I not spray for fungus?

not all of it... maybe 20% if I'm not mistaken. tenacity won't kill it all although fescue is a little more sensitive to it than say kbg

So don't do any fungus treatment?and would the Scott's green max do anything?

Is this a weed? I articles about getting rid of it and see articles about it being used for golf courses.

My guess is you didn't cut your lawn at least 2-3 times a week and with all the rain and fertilizer applied it should have been done. Once you let it overgrow and cut it back too much the crown of the grass is showing which gives a brown look to your grass.

I usually cut it about once a week. But the rain ruined that some.

Like Joe said, a lot of us in the NE are having problems. I'm in north NJ. For me, the partially shaded grass is doing much better than the grass in full sun. So is it lack of water (even though we've had frequent rain, but maybe not enough) or is fungus? I have yet to really be able to identify a fungus.

Its funny as I'm typing this we're having a cloudburst of heavy rain. If that only totals 1/4 inch, then it doesn't help much other than cause me to stop irrigating. Right now I'm taking a wait and watch approach.

Yeah I am not sure what to do now. Some say fungus some say water some say the cut. Like I want to water it to make sure but if it is fungal guns that will make it worse. Does anyone know if it will hurt to spray for fungus to be safe? I have a thing of Bayer fungus Contol that attaches to the hose. Will I do any damage if I spray that?

There are downsides to fungicides. They harm the mycorrhizae. Here is an articleon mycorrhizae. If your grass has a fungal disease, fungicide can save the grass. The mycorrhizae take a hit, though. You have to weigh the risks and advantages.

Ugh I'm so confused what to do. Lol relatively new to the lawn care world. Just want it to green back up and be nice. My head is spinning haha

I would give it at least 4 weeks to recover. You can put some compost, it will protect the roots from the July sun and keep the whole soil moist. In September, overseed and fertilize a little bit. Keep the blade of your mower high in the meantime.

Also It looks like your soil is mostly clay. Drainage is maybe also part of the issue. Compost will help with that

Bt dubs aka means by the way as in by the way I'm in PA, to specify not just north east. But thank you for the information i have screenshotted the info. I will get a better photo when I get back home hopefully that will help. Thank you for all the help so far it's much appreciated. I was just following the Scott's app that told me what to lay when, then I found and remembered this great forum. Wish I looked in more before.

OK got a few more photos of spots that are in the shade. Also I haven't had to water really this year because we have had so much rain. I have watered twice this year and both times (were weeks apart) because of natural rain and I left out there till a tuna can filled from the sprinkler. Here are the photos.

And here's a couple more and and over view. Everyone have a great 4th and thanks again.

Telling you again... you have a lot of bentgrass in most of your pics. That is in large part the problem.

Was just responding to dchall. He asked for a few more photos.

Ditto, It looks very similar to the condition of my lawn. I.e. Too much water, too little watet, or something else? post. NC State was kind enough to read my post and determined it could be dollar spot. Good luck.
