PASSION FRUIT IN SYRACUSE, NY

I have a hobby of growing tropical plants up here in the blizzard belt of the Great Lakes. About 10 - 12 years ago I planted some passion fruit seeds from a fruit I got at the store. I bring the vine outside every summer. Well this summer I got a big surprise. It actually grew fruit! Up until now the only thing I've had luck with are pineapples

Congrats on a decade-long wait! Have you ever tried hand pollinating the flowers? That would guarantee fruits.

Congrats on your fruit! I just started hand pollinating mine as we have received a lot of flowers but no fruit this year.

I didn't even get a chance to SEE the flowers! I must have just missed them. But now that I know it will bear fruit, I will be more diligent about looking for them and hand pollinate them in the future. I assume I only have two fruits growing because the flowers weren't pollinated... The fruit that grew were probably pollinated by stink bugs. We seem to have an epidemic of them this year and they tend to climb on anything with a scent. I also have a needle palm that makes seeds every year and I constantly see them crawling all over the seed cluster. Now if I can get my banana trees, grapefruit tree and dragonfruit cacti to bare fruit I will be convinced that global warming is getting serious.

Haha.. global warming is allowing my cherimoyas to bear fruit this year, little babymoyas!

I notice that passion flowers bloom in the evening, around 5-6PM for me here in CA. The opened flower only blooms once, so if they're not pollinated at that time, the flower will drop the next day, resulting in no fruit for that flower. Sometimes if I am out there watering the garden in the evening, I'll grab the paintbrush I leave by the passion trunk and hand pollinate just for fun. Most of the time I don't hand pollinate, the awesome bees do the work for me. Now if only I could get this passionfruit "tent" under control!

About two years, if you live in a warm place. Mine was grafted so I got flowers and fruit in one year. If you really want them to grow strong, build a big trellis and the vines will grow a lot. Remember to fertilize well and water frequently for fruit production.
