I'm stuck and need suggestions!

Here is my eating area off of the kitchen. We don't use it, we have a formal dining room, but this for now, is an eating area. The chairs and picture is new and I'm stuck with them. (I'm trying to sell them and plan on replacing with rattan parsons chairs) However, I really want to soften this whole look right now. I want a more traditional look, almost farmhouse but just short of it. I'm on a tight budget too, so be gentle. What about a nice rug under the table to soften it? What color? Ok, go!! And thanks!!!

One of my favorite kitchens was one in which there were two large, comfortable wing chairs and an ottoman that they shared. A small table, a reading lamp, a basket of magazines and a pile of books.... cozy, yet friendly. A place for guests to sit, drink wine and chat while you are cooking. A place for a relaxing cup of coffee and the newspaper in the morning, or a snuggle and a story with a child before bed time. I would turn this space into a little lounge area! With a dog bed, too, of course!

Just for reference here's the other end of the kitchen. As you can see, I prefer more traditional....

What would make you use this area? You need to think of that. Might you benefit from repurposing it to a little work area off the kitchen? A desk and bookcase to work with recipes and household accounts? A homework and games area?

I do like your existing furniture but if it doesn't match what you need in your lifestyle perhaps you should rethink?

Nice! I could see sitting there with your laptop and a cup of coffee. I don't think you need a rug but if you'd like one it would need to be almost as wide as the room. The items on the floor are not really working. I'd keep it simple.

My plan is to eventually make it a sitting area, but for now, I'm stuck with this and want to soften it up.
I was wondering about the crap in the corners. I like the plant, but I think it's too low. The stuff on the right irritates me and will be gone today! Lol!

Are you ultimately keeping the table and only selling the chairs?

There's no rule that you *need* a table in your eat-in area. So you could eventually replace it with a sofa and coffee table against the far wall or a couple of easy chairs with a table between them. I think it would look great and allow you to enjoy your bright, sunny sitting area in comfort. Rattan will add another rough texture and not serve to soften the space at all.

I could see an oriental rug in here, it would look beautiful and is appropriate for both traditional and farmhouse styles. Linen-look panels would soften the window. On a budget, they are available at Walmart. If you don't need privacy or light control, a fixed panel at each side would be sufficient.

Forgot to mention, have you tried swapping the white console and thw rolling island? It looks like the console is a bit shorter so would fit under the window frame better.

Remove the sticks and put your live plant in a tall planter to raise it up. Add soft panels on each side of the window, perhaps in the same shade of blue that I can see in your formal dining room.

I'm getting that for now you want to leave that furniture in there and just make it look better? Okay, I would consider painting the end wall in one of the richer colours from the art. If you can get bargain drapes in the same colour for the window, so much the better. Just dump the stuff on the right, you don't need it, because you are going to put a much taller plant on the left. Spend what it takes to get something really big and gorgeous. Get an inexpensive, warm-looking neutral creamy beige rug. If you can, put more art on the left wall -- perhaps a set of three (horizontally) or four (in a square) smaller pictures.
