Your choice, but the whole purpose in planting bush varieties is to avoid the need for a trellis.

I use small tomato cages or bamboo sticks. Otherwise the cukes will be touching the soil. I grow bush cukes only and they tend to flop over if not supported.

for me, it's to avoid taking over the entire neighborhood and keeping it manageable, not the fact that i still might need a trellis.. i don't want to rent a wood chipper at the end of the season anymore. ;)

last year i grew straight 8 and just one plant took over everything. covered a 6 foot tall fence (more than 12 feet long), my planting bed, and it even grew about 15 feet away from its base and started climbing my garage. i was almost afraid for my life, scary big.. i couldn't even locate most of the cucumbers and after the plant died back, i found a few baseball bat size cucumbers..

this year i am trying Bush champion in a 20 inch container with a large tomato cage. supposedly they can still spread and climb a bit, but usually stay within 2-3 feet in either direction and from the ground.

how big they get probably varies. i mean in the right conditions i'm sure any plant would grow much bigger than it normally would in the average garden.. Bush's should be manageable with just a tomato cage or a few sticks tied together into a tepee.
